Siddhasana: the perfect pose for meditation
Siddhasana or the “Perfect Pose” is the asana traditionally used for meditation and is the most popular dhyana posture. In Sanskrit “siddha” refers to a person who is spiritually enlightened. It is one of the sitting postures for pranayama, mudras and other yogasanas.
- While seated with spine erect, bend the left knee and place the sole of the left foot against the right thigh so that the heel touches the perineum.
- Bend the left knee and press the right ankle with left ankle. Press the pubic area with left ankle.
- Place both the arms over the knees in gyana mudra. Touch the thumb and forefinger of each hand and extend the other three fingers.
- Close your eyes. Breathe normally and be conscious of your breathing.
- Switch the feet on alternative sittings.
- If you are a beginner, you can start off by bringing the left heel to sit on the right ankle bone and allow the top of the left foot to rest on the ground in front of the right foot.
This asana promotes freedom in the ankle joints, hip and knee. This yogasana calms the entire nervous system. It redirects the blood flow to the lower spine and abdomen. It cleanses the impurities of 72,000 nadis (energy channel originating in the navel plexus). It improves concentration and memory, and disciplines the senses.
