If you are traveling, the topmost concern in your mind should be your well being. Too many people neglect their health and ruin their holiday. In fact, it is estimated that almost 50% of people who travel abroad fall prey to sickness.

Here are some tips which will help you maintain your health so that you can have fun going places.

Before leaving

Check if the place you are going is safe. Do not go if there is a chance of an epidemic.

Check whether you need any vaccinations. Try to get them at least six weeks before you leave.

Get a complete medical and dental check up done so that you don’t get any surprise while traveling.

Pack all your medicines with you. Take more than necessary.

Carry you prescriptions and medical records with you, atleast in digital form.

Take along a first aid kit.

To avoid jet lag, check the time zone of the place where you are going and start maintaining the sleeping schedule a few days before leaving.

Carry clothing according to the weather at the place you are going. Pack as many clothes as you can.

Buy travel insurance. If you try to cut costs here, you could end up paying a lot more later.

While traveling

Eat only steaming and well cooked food. Avoid raw food and food from street vendors. Peel fruits yourself.

Drink only bottled water. Avoid ice.

Don’t use overcrowded transport. Wear a helmet on a bike. Walk carefully on the road.

Swim only in swimming pools and the sea. Do not swim in rivers, ponds, lakes etc.

Beware of mosquitoes. Carry a mosquito repellant with you.

Always wear footwear.

Reduce your alcohol consumption. You want to have all your wits with you in a foreign place.

Sleep well. Carry your own pillow if you think it will help.

Try to exercise as much as you can. Walking is best.

Take care of you personal hygiene.

Yoga improves the swimmers’ body alignment, balance and grace which are integral for all sports performance. It helps in the coordination of muscular and respiratory system. Pranayama helps in acquiring more oxygen for the muscles and body while swimming. Yoga improves your body’s balance and makes it more streamlined; it also increases the flexibility of your arms, legs and hips.

Your body cannot get stronger without gravity. So, in swimming, there is not much chance for your muscles and bones to build up. Yoga helps in increasing bone density. It helps build extended and supple muscles that are less prone to injury.

Adho Mukha Svanasana (Downward Facing Dog Pose) and Urdhva Mukha Svanasana (Upward Facing Dog Pose) for shoulders. Baddha Konasana helps in forming free and loose hips. Ankles help in propelling the body with a kick start. Virasana (Warrior Pose) makes your ankles flexible. Trikonasana (Triangle Pose) helps in improving breathing on alternate sides of the body which is very essential while swimming. Camel pose strengthens the back of your body and relaxes your head and neck. Head stand pose strengthens the back and shoulder.
