Cigarette smoking is one of the causes of many health conditions, particularly respiratory disorders. The nicotine and smoke in cigars afflict the lungs resulting in respiratory conditions such as lung cancer and many other lung conditions. Hence, we are aware of harmful effects of smoking in long and short term.

Smoking during pregnancy

can have ill effects on both the mother and baby as well. Read through the below lines to know in detail about the consequences of smoking.

Effects of Smoking During Pregnancy:

Following is a list of effects of smoking while pregnant:

Premature delivery:

Premature labor and delivery consequently are the dangers of smoking. As we are aware of the earlier labor and the delivery, it is harmful for the baby, as the vital organs of the baby will not be developed completely. The baby wouldn’t be able to breathe properly and may need some assistance. If the baby is weak, it can result in death of the baby.

Miscarriage:

Miscarriage is the most common effect of smoking while pregnant. There are chances of miscarriage even if you don’t smoke. The chances of miscarriage increase if you smoke in pregnancy. It is a fact that smoking can even kill an unborn baby. Additionally, stillbirth risk also increases with smoking.

Birth weight:

There is no surprise that smoking in pregnancy can result in low weight of the baby at the birth time. The substances in cigar smoke cross placenta in blood stream of baby, which hinders fetus growth. This does not provide sufficient nutrition to fetus growth and development.

Birth defects:

Many birth defects such as cleft lip or cleft platelet are observed in babies. Besides this, the baby may develop mental retardation, cerebral palsy or learning disabilities. Another important thing is that smoking doesn’t let sufficient oxygen to enter bloodstream. In pregnant women, this can have a negative impact on the blood of the baby. This results in increased heartbeat of the baby.

Placenta problems: If they smoke in pregnancy, women can face problems associated to placenta. The placenta may get separated from uterus before the baby’s birth or the placenta may get very low.

Other problems that can develop in babies whose mothers smoked during pregnancy are poor health and behavioral problems. Passive smoking can also harm the fetus.

Dangers of Secondhand Smoke:

Besides harmful effects of smoking on the mother and baby, there are other side effects which can be caused by passive smoking. You might be wondering that even the secondhand smoke have effects on baby. You must know that even secondhand smoke have same effect on the baby and the mother. Following are some effects of passive

Teenagers are attracted to smoking by reasons like peer pressure, adverse influence of movies, to look cool, to be rebellious etc. However the perceived image boost that smoking is supposed to give comes with many deleterious side effects. Research has proved that smoking shortens one’s lifespan and causes heart disease, emphysema and cancer. Once a teenager gets addicted to smoking, it is hard for them to give up this dreadful habit. Read on to learn more about

teenagers and smoking

in this article.

Why Smoking is Addictive

Tobacco in cigarettes contains a highly addictive chemical called nicotine. Smokers’ bodies quickly get used to nicotine and they begin to need more of this chemical to feel normal. Teenage is a vulnerable period because statistics reveal that 90% of smokers begin their habit before they reach 18 years of age. Teenagers need to realize it is easier to not start at all than to quit smoking after becoming addicted.

Effects of Smoking on Health

Tobacco poisons like cyanide and nicotine can kill a person if ingested in large enough doses. Our body warns us the first time we smoke as we feel nausea, pain and sickness initially. But, if we do not heed to these warning signals and continue to smoke, the long-term health effects are very harsh. Smoking can cause cancers of the bladder, stomach, throat and lungs. Smokers also attract infections like pneumonia and bronchitis. In the US, smoking causes 20% of all deaths.

More Health Effects of Smoking

Smokers slowly begin to lose their bone density and become susceptible to osteoporosis. Their looks also suffer as they develop yellow teeth and wrinkles. Smoking affects one’s stamina and athletic ability as lung power is reduced drastically. Your performance in bed will also be impacted and you may experience fertility problems. Women smokers who use birth control methods like the ring or patch become more vulnerable to health problems like heart attacks.

Smoking Impact on Teenagers

Teenagers should not think that smoking only causes health problems in the long-term. Nicotine affects a person quickly and teenagers could experience the following problems:

Bad skin:

Smoking adversely affects your looks as blood vessels get restricted which prevents the supply of nutrients and oxygen to the skin. As a result, smokers look unhealthy and pale. They also become vulnerable to contracting a skin disease called psoriasis.

Your love life could get badly affected as smokers develop bad breath, which will repel your date.

Cigarette smoke lingers on the smoker’s hair, clothes, car and furniture. This smell can be hard to get rid of.

As mentioned earlier, smoking reduces one’s athletic performance by causing shortness of breath, decreased circulation and rapid heartbeat.

Smoking athletes also face higher injury risk and their healing ability is reduced.

Smoking lowers one’s immunity and they become more susceptible to pneumonia, bronchitis, flu and cold. It is especially dangerous for asthma sufferers to smoke.

Teenagers should not try smoking to lose weight. Smoking for dieting emaciates the body and reduces its ability to grow properly and ward off illnesses.

E-Cigarettes and Hookahs

Of late, e-cigarettes and hookahs are becoming popular among youngsters as hip alternatives to cigarettes. However, these tobacco devices are equally dangerous. Electronic cigarettes host carcinogens and toxins. Hookahs could be more dangerous than cigarettes as they lack filters. Besides, since the hookah is passed around, there is a great danger of contracting infectious germs.

Summary

Teenagers need to realize that all tobacco forms – smokeless tobacco, hookahs, cigars, pipes and cigarettes are dangerous. So, stay smoke-free to enjoy good health and happiness. You may be encouraged to know that smoking rate among high school students in the US has dropped to just 20%. Join the remaining 80% and enjoy better looks, better performance, more energy and more money which will make your life a happy cruise to adulthood.

Primary instincts of life not just include hunger and sleep but also sex. There is no denial about it and there is absolutely nothing in not being upfront about it. While sex gives utmost satisfaction, inability to have a healthy sex life might lead not only to be an indicator of some physical disorder but also to a disturbed mental state.

Sexual activity demands a relaxed state of mind and complete concentration. But when tension takes over often this activity is dampened beyond repair. Sexual dysfunction is a crucial problem found commonly in case of men more than in women and it might take the form of impotence. If taken care at the initial stages sexual impotence can be dealt with healthy lifestyle.

Definition of Sexual Impotence:

“Impotence is the inability to maintain an erection of the penis for satisfactory sexual intercourse regardless of the status of ejaculation.”

Causes of Sexual Impotence:

• Diabetes
• Depression
• Alcoholism
• Tiredness
• Therapeutic use of Oestrogens
• Paralysis of parasympathetic nerves by drugs

Experts say, “Other causes of impotence include a devitalized condition of the system in general. The main problem of secondary impotence is the apprehension created by an earlier failure, which generates a good deal of anxiety for the next time. Impotence takes three forms. There is primary impotence when the man’s erectile dysfunction is there from the very beginning of sexual activity and he simply cannot have an erection. Secondary impotence is the commonest and this implies that the man can normally attain an erection but fails on one or more occasions in between normal activity. The third form is associated with advancing age.”

Smoking can sometimes benefit your health. Recent researches have shown a link between consumption of tobacco and reduced risk of Parkinson’s disease. This study reveals the neuroprotective potentials of tobacco leaves. The benefits are not just for smokers, but also for those people who consume tobacco by other means.

The risk of Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease is twice higher in non-smokers when compared to smokers. This is true not just in the case of cigarette smokers, but also in the case of tobacco consumers by other means. The benefits are not from the compounds generated by the combustion of tobacco, but from the constituents in the tobacco leaf itself.

The Tobacco Related Disease Research Program gives possible explanations for the protective effect of tobacco. Basal Ganglia which is the area of the brain affected by Parkinson’s disease, contains some nicotinic receptors. Depletion of Dopamine, a brain chemical in the basal ganglia, is seen in patients suffering from Parkinson’s disease. This depletion is caused mainly due to exposure to harmful chemicals. Nicotine from the tobacco stimulates the nicotinic receptors in the basal ganglia thus enhancing the release of dopamine.

According to researchers in Netherlands, higher consumption of coffee and alcohol also reduces the risk of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease.
