Prickly heat is a red, itchy skin rash which gives a burning or prickling feeling. Medically, it is called miliaria. It occurs because of excessive sweating in humid and hot weather. Bacteria and dead skin cells block sweat glands, leading to skin inflammation accompanied by a spotty rash which could blister sometimes. Usually, prickly heat affects the neck area. In severe cases, it can spread to the back and chest, and up to the face and ears.

More About Prickly Heat
In most cases, the symptoms disappear without any treatment. If your baby is affected, remove their clothes and keep them cool. Prickly heat usually disappears in a few days. But, if the weather continues to be hot and humid, the symptoms may last for a longer period.

Symptoms of Prickly Heat

Small, red, itchy bumps and blisters on the skin

The affected skin area feels prickly, burning or stinging

In severe cases, there are small blisters

Causes of Prickly Heat
As mentioned earlier, in humid and hot weather, bacteria and dead skin cells may block the sweat glands. As a result, sweat is retained and built up on the skin causing inflammation and prickly heat.

Treatments for Prickly Heat

First, wash the affected skin with cool water. Then, pat some talcum powder on it. You can also mix baking soda in some water and use it on the prickly heat.

Apply a cool compress on the affected skin. Mix baking soda in some cool water. Dip a washcloth in this mixture and apply on the rash for a few minutes. Repeat this compress four to five times every day.

To relieve itching, use anti-histamine medications or creams.

To soothe the affected skin, use creams containing natural oatmeal or calamine lotion BP.

You can also soak away the itchy feeling. Add some baking soda or an oatmeal product to tepid bath water. Soak in this water for a few minutes to relieve itching.

How to Prevent Prickly Heat

Do not wear heavy or thick clothes in hot and humid weather.

To enable sweat evaporation, wear loose cotton clothes in summer. This will also prevent skin irritation.

Take cool showers and baths to keep the skin cool in summer.

Try to spend more time in air-conditioned rooms in hot weather.

Do not use heavy moisturizers. Use light, water-based lotions.

Avoid strenuous exercising in hot and humid weather to prevent excessive sweating.

Summary
Prickly heat can be a problem for people in countries which have hot and humid summers. But, a little precaution will help you avoid this problem. Stay out of the sun during the hottest hours, drink plenty of water and bathe or shower in cool water to prevent prickly heat and stay hydrated and healthy.

Every one, particularly women desires to have a healthy skin and flawless complexion. Most women frequently visit parlors or spend money on cosmetics to get the smooth skin. If they realize that maintaining and caring for a clear skin is possible, right at their door steps. Read through the following lines to know more about natural skin care tips.

Natural Skin Care Tips:
Here are some tips for natural skin care:

Drink plenty of water: The best and cheapest way for maintaining skin is drinking plenty of water every day. Water enhances digestive health, thereby prevents all kinds of skin problems like boils. Water always keep your skin hydrated as well and avoids formation of wrinkles and fine lines. Hence, the best skin care tip is drinking lots of water every day.

Regular exercise: Studies showed that acne is mainly caused due to stress. So, another best tip for skin care is regular exercise as it wards off stress. Practicing physical exercises daily gives glow to the skin and also more oxygen is generated in body. Hence, regular exercising gives you smooth and radiant skin.

Healthy Diet: The most important tip is to have a balanced-diet. You must have some healthy foods in your diet that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids like flaxseed, olive oil and fish. You must also take calcium rich foods like milk and yogurt and also foods with vitamin A. Fresh vegetables and fruits particularly that are rich in vitamin C like broccoli, tomatoes and oranges. These make your skin clear. Also, you must avoid some foods like junk food and fried foods as these make your skin oily and sluggish.

Undertake moisturizing, cleansing and toning: For obtaining good, fresh and blemish-free skin, keep it clean always, particularly oily skin people. So, people with oily skin must wash their skin twice or thrice a day using a good facial wash. Also, you must not over wash it as the skin becomes lifeless and rough. Those with dry skin must wash the skin twice – once in the morning and before going to sleep. After washing, you must tone the skin with a best skin toner. Lastly, moisturize your skin with chemical-free, herbal skin cream. If you are in 40’s, apply night eye cream around your eyes for avoiding the formation of wrinkles. Finally, cleansing, toning and moisturizing must be done with the quality skin care products.

Application of Face Masks: There are several ingredients available in the kitchen, which can be used for making facial masks at home. Apply these facial masks once in a week for keeping the skin smooth and beautiful.

Bruises can occur in any part of the body due to reasons such as a fall, scrape, accident etc. Bruises are also called hematomas or contusions. They change the skin color as blood begins to concentrate in the impacted area. Generally, bruises do not pose any risk of infection. Read on to learn how to cure bruises easily and effectively.

How to Cure Bruises
Wash the affected part with soap and cold water. Then, apply ice on the bruise. Washing prevents infection if the skin is broken. Icing prevents swelling and constricts the capillaries, restricting blood spread.

Elastic Bandage
Put an elastic bandage to constrict the blood vessels. This will prevent escape of blood and make the bruise smaller.

Elevation
If possible, elevate the bruised part above the heart level. This will reduce pressure on the affected area, reduce swelling and minimize the bruised area.

Warm Compress
After a day, apply a warm compress on the bruise. Apply only for about 20 minutes, three or four times in a day. This will promote quicker healing.

Medications
Take OTC painkillers to relieve pain and minimize blood clots. They can also help the bruise become smaller.

Ointments
Plenty of herbal and commercial ointments are available to cure bruises. Try them out for quick and effective relief.

Arnica: This is a natural component in many ointments, and very effective for bruises. Apply on the bruised part for three or four times daily till bruise heals completely.

Zinc oxide: helps to repair bruises. Therefore, coat the bruise with zinc oxide before hitting the bed.

Parsley: Crush some parsley and apply on the bruise. Then, wrap an elastic bandage over it to control inflammation. But, do not try this treatment if the skin is broken on the bruised area.

Vinegar and warm water: Mix both of these and apply on the bruise. This mixture helps to get rid of the pooled blood underneath the skin.

Vitamins
Vitamins K, C and E help to cure bruises. Ingest them orally or apply directly on the affected part. These vitamins repair the tissues and heal the bruise and skin.

Natural Remedies for Curing Bruises

Break open a raw egg and apply this on the bruise.

Add flowers to olive oil and then apply them on the bruise.

You can make an ointment from daisy leaves and apply them on the skin to cure bruises.

Apply Comfrey or buchu tea on the bruised skin. This will reduce the pain and prevent skin discoloration.

Use a cotton ball and apply Heinz vinegar on the bruise to hasten the healing process.

Summary
Bruises heal naturally over time. But, if your bruise still remains after a couple of weeks, consult a doctor immediately. This prolonged bruise may be a symptom of some serious condition.

Sunburn is caused by overexposure to the sun’s ultraviolet (UV rays) which results in red, painful and swollen skin. It can range from severe to mild depending on your skin type and period of exposure to the sun. Sunburn can be serious as it can lead to sun damage and skin cancer. There is greater danger of sunburn in tropic latitudes.

Symptoms of Sunburn

In serious cases, there will be severe redness of skin

In minor cases, there is slight tenderness and redness in the impacted areas

Sometimes, blisters can erupt on the skin

Extreme sunburn cases need hospitalization

In extremely severe cases, weakness, fainting, low blood pressure, vomiting, nausea, chills and fever may occur

There may also be itching and peeling of skin

Diagnosing Sunburn
Mild cases can be treated at home. Severe cases need the attention of a dermatologist. The doctor will check your medical history and symptoms, and conduct a physical examination.

Treatments for Sunburn

Prompt treatment is essential to avoid skin damage and prevent skin cancer.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) and aspirin are recommended by doctors.

Drink plenty of water and use cool compresses on the affected skin.

High quality moisturizing lotions and creams are also prescribed.

Sunburned skin can be treated by applying topical products containing vitamin E and/or aloe vera.

To reduce itching and inflammation, you can use hydrocortisone cream.

It is a myth that butter can treat sunburn. On the contrary, butter can damage the skin and prevent healing.

For severe cases, doctors recommend oral steroid therapy.

If there is blistering, steroids will not be used as this can cause infection.

If heat stress causes dehydration, IV fluids are administered after hospitalization.

Severe sunburn cases need to be treated in the burn unit of the hospital.

How to Prevent Sunburn

Sunblocks and sunscreens can prevent sunburn by blocking UV light. These creams have a SPF (sunburn protection factor) rating. Use sunscreens with a high SPF rating to minimize skin damage.

Avoid going out in the sun at peak hours of the day.

Wear goggles or sunglasses when going out during the day.

If your face is sunburned, do not use harsh chemical-based soaps on it as this can cause inflammation and skin damage.

Eat fresh fruits that contain high water content like cantaloupes, sweet limes, oranges and watermelons.

Home Remedies for Sunburn

Aloe: Apply the gel of aloe leaves on the affected skin. You can also use an ointment with high aloe vera content.

Bergamot: Mix bergamot oil in your bathwater and soak in the tub to make your skin feel cool.

Cucumber: Rub a cucumber slice on the sunburned area to cool the skin.

Epsom salts: Dissolve them in water, dip a cloth in this water and use as a compress.

Ice: Apply ice cubes on the impacted area to cool the skin and relieve pain.

Lavender: Mix a few drops in some water and apply on the sunburned skin for relief.

Oatmeal: Add some oatmeal to warm bathwater. Soak in this water for a few minutes for relief.

Peppermint: Apply peppermint directly on the sunburned skin to refresh it.

Potato: Grate a potato and apply on the stinging skin. Potato has starch which can relieve the sunburn.

Various factors like infections, medicines, immune system disorders and heat can cause skin irritation. Sometimes, an allergen triggers an immune system response and causes skin allergy. Read on to learn more about

skin allergies

in this article.

Types of Skin Allergies

Allergic contact dermatitis

is caused when the skin comes into contact with allergens. For example, those suffering from nickel allergy can develop swollen, itch, scaly, bumpy or red skin when they touch jewelry made of nickel.

Atopic dermatitis (eczema)

is caused by immune dysfunction in the skin layers. It begins in early childhood and sometimes even infancy. It is linked to food allergy, hay fever and asthma.

Urticaria (hives)

are skin inflammations which are triggered by the immune system when it releases histamine. This causes leaking blood vessels and the skin becomes swollen. Exercise and heat can also cause hives. Allergic reactions to insect bites, foods and medicines can also cause hives. Eczema and hives can be painful and uncomfortable, but they are not infectious.

Angioedema

occurs when the skin’s deep layers become swollen. It often occurs along with hives. Genitals, mouth and eyelids are most often affected by angioedema. It is caused by allergic reactions to foods or medications. Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a serious but rare genetic condition in which body parts like the airways, intestinal wall, face, feet and hands become swollen.

Symptoms of Skin Allergies

Common symptoms are itching, swelling and redness. However, each condition has its own specific symptoms:

In the case of urticaria (hives), there is swelling and raised white or red bumps that itch, cover large parts, migrate from one place to another, and can appear anywhere.

Angioedema commonly appears on the lips, cheeks and around the eye region. It can also occur inside the throat or bowels, and on the genitals, feet or hands.

Chronic hives can last for years in some cases.

Symptoms of atopic dermatitis (eczema) are very dry skin, blisters and itchy bumps. The skin may appear as brownish-gray to red colored patches. The bumps may leak fluid when scratched. In babies, eczema can appear on the scalp, forehead and cheeks. Children may suffer rashes behind the ears and knees, on the wrists and where the elbow joint bends. Teens can suffer rashes in the same spots as children, and also on the feet and hands.

Diagnosis of Skin Allergies

To relieve the symptoms, the cause of the skin allergy has to be identified. The immunologist/allergist will study the patient’s medical history. Tests may be required to diagnose the causes that are causing the allergic symptoms.

Treatment and Management of Skin Allergies

Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema)

Do not rub or scratch the rash. Scratching leads to skin infections and bleeding, and can permanently damage the skin by causing thick leathery spots.

Use ointments, creams or cold compresses to relieve the itching. Keep your skin well moisturized. Use moisturizing creams and ointments, and not lotions.

Do not use soaps containing sodium laurel sulfate.

Topical calcineurin inhibitors and corticosteroid cream medicines are used to treat the rash.

To relieve the itchy feeling, doctors prescribe antihistamines. For severe cases, oral corticosteroids are prescribed.

If bacterial infection in the skin triggers your eczema condition, then antibiotics are prescribed.

Patients often have to deal with social stigma as others may ignore them thinking the rash is infectious. So, psychological treatment may also be needed for some patients.

Urticaria (Hives)

If the cause of the allergy is identified, you should avoid the trigger.

Oral antihistamines are used to control the itch and prevent recurrence of the rash.

In case of severe flare-ups, corticosteroids are needed to reduce inflammation.

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disorder which causes scaly and reddish inflamed patches on the skin. The areas most commonly affected are the groin, scalp, knees and elbows. Severe psoriasis is especially dangerous as it can affect daily functioning. Psoriasis affects about two percent of the world’s populace. Psoriasis can impact anyone of any race and age, anywhere in the world. Both sexes are vulnerable. Severe psoriasis can cause emotional distress, job stress, social embarrassment and other issues because the skin becomes ugly to look at. Read on to learn more about the causes, symptoms and treatments for psoriasis.

Psoriasis Facts

There is no known cause for psoriasis

It is a hereditary condition

It is not infectious

Psoriasis progresses and regresses spontaneously and there can be periodic remissions during which patients have clear skin

Psoriasis can only be controlled with medication and not cured

But promising therapies have been discovered and there is a bright future for research on psoriasis treatments

Causes of Psoriasis

There is no known cause. But, it is thought that environmental factors and genes may combine to cause this condition. Frequently, psoriasis is found among members in the same family. Researchers say the immune system may play an important role. Though research on psoriasis has been done for more than 30 years, the main cause of this condition still remains a mystery.

Symptoms of Psoriasis

The skin becomes dry, raised, thick and the skin color becomes pink or red.

Areas of skin affected by abrasions, overuse, repeated rubbing and trauma are more vulnerable to psoriasis.

There are many psoriasis types such as psoriasis vulgaris (the most common type), guttate psoriasis (small spots), inverse psoriasis (forms in folds of the skin like buttocks, navel and underarms) and pustular psoriasis (small, yellowish, pus-filled blisters).

Genital lesions are commonly found on the penis.

Psoriasis can cause tiny pits or depressions on the nails.

Scalp psoriasis may resemble dandruff as the symptoms are red skin and dry flakes.

Psoriasis Affects Joints

In many patients, psoriasis causes joint problems such as psoriatic arthritis. The joints of the ankles, knees and hands are commonly affected. Psoriatic arthritis can be destructive and inflammatory, and needs medications to be controlled. Typically, psoriatic arthritis affects those between 30 to 40 years in age.

Diagnosis of Psoriasis

The doctor makes use of family medical history, personal medical history and a physical examination to detect psoriasis. X-rays and lab tests help to determine the severity of the condition and to exclude other ailments like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Incidence of Psoriasis

In the US, psoriasis affects about eight million Americans. Worldwide, the condition affects around 125 million people. African-Americans seem more immune to psoriasis as the rate of incidence among them is half that of Caucasians.

Treatments for Psoriasis

As mentioned earlier, psoriasis treatment can only control the symptoms and not completely cure the condition. The treatment depends on the total body area affected, the severity and type of ailment.

Mild disease which affects small body areas can be treated with sprays, lotions and topical creams applied on the skin. If a psoriasis plaque is resistant and tough, a steroid injection can be injected directly into it.

If the psoriasis is moderate or severe, topical products are less effective. These cases need injections, pills and ultra-violet light treatment.

Psoriatic arthritis needs systemic medications to prevent joint destruction.

Lotions and Creams for Psoriasis

Effective topical treatments include anthralin, coal tar, topical immunomodulators (pimecrolimus and tacrolimus), moisturizers, topical retinoids (Tazorac), calcitriol and topical corticosteroids.

Prognosis for Psoriasis

The overall prognosis for psoriasis patients is good as the condition can be controlled. Recent research reveals a link between psoriasis and conditions like heart disease and obesity. Of late, a lot of research is being done on discovering effective treatments for psoriasis and to find out the underlying causes of this condition.
