Erection is the most complicated process and its success is very much associated with the activity of the brain. Brain sends signals to penis and based on their positive or negative character, flow of blood into penis is either prohibited or stimulated and erection may take place. Psychological impotence may be determined by the feeling of inadequacy, anxiety, stress and other negative feelings. An individual may be healthy in physical sense, but still cannot achieve erection due to psychological factors.

If a person experiences impotence once at the least in the lifetime, then it is normal and cannot be considered as an erectile dysfunction. Singular episodes are experienced by most men because of several factors and people must worry if the isolated tendencies turn to tendency. If the erection failure is frequent, it must be considered as a problem and requires medical attention and treatment.

Causes of Psychological Impotence:

Following are the factors of psychological impotence:

Relationship Problems:

If the couple lacks communication, it may become a problem. It is must to be open and honest in a relationship to overcome many problems, in order to reduce stress and anxiety levels. Mutual desire for cooperating in some sense is helpful and important. If the couple lack this, generally problems with intercourse may worsen, particularly during erection.

Depression:

Anxiety and stress are considered the most common causes of erection problems. Often, they are the states that leads to impotence, hence these problems are interconnected. What concerns clinical depression, it can evoke erection problems as it afflicts the brain function for stimulating erection and arousal. During depression, even the positive emotions are suppressed and influences the ability to maintain and achieve erection.

Fatigue:

Fatigue is another cause of psychological impotence. This is able to evoke temporary impotence until a person is exhausted and lacks energy. To overcome this condition, take more rest to restore the energy. If fatigue and stress are reduced and still erection does not get back to normal, you are suggested to consult a physician.

Stress:

Often, psychological impotence is associated with stress. Every person has enough stress in life and if the limit is exceeded, it may lead to erection problems. If the stress is either due to work, financial, marital or sexual, it may make your life unpleasant when compared to other causes. Often, stress is related with the loss of libido in men and to overcome this, reduce stress levels.

Impotence is also referred to as

erectile dysfunction

. This is the most common sexual problem which afflicts millions of men across the world. Men suffering with erectile dysfunction experience a consistent inability to maintain or achieve an erection which is sufficient enough for completing sexual intercourse. This is a treatable condition and men can lead a normal sexual life. Based on the impotence cause, medical professionals have defined six types of impotence. This assists medical experts to detect the exact cause and recommend an appropriate treatment.

Types of Impotence:

Following are the six types of impotence:

Neurogenic Impotence:

The supply of nerve to penis is weak and complicated. Erection is maintained or achieved due to impulses conducted on the penis nerves as they control the veins and arteries that manifest the blood circulation in penis. Any injury to back particularly that involves the spinal cord and vertebral column or nerves associated with penis, apart from an injury to other penis nerves may lead to neurogenic impotence. This results in surgeries on urinary bladder, spine, urethra, prostate and rectum to treat impotence.

Arteriogenic Impotence:

This occurs when the arteries supplying blood to penis become narrow. Thus, penis is unable to receive sufficient blood needed for erection. This type of impotence is most commonly seen in elderly people, particularly people suffering from high blood pressure and diabetes. Even bicycle riders report arteriogenic impotence as they often sustain friction in arterial region, that may result in clot like formation in the artery.

Impotence from Diabetes:

Diabetics often experience impotence. It is a fact that nearly 50% of male diabetic patients experience impotence. Men suffering from erectile dysfunction must try to control the blood sugar levels by changing their eating habits and lifestyle. They should also monitor their blood sugar levels every month.

Endocrinologic Impotence:

This is also called hormonal impotence. This occurs due to insufficiency or imbalance of sexual hormones, that is estrogen and testosterone levels in the blood stream. This is nearly 5 – 10% of all organic impotence.

Venogenic Impotence:

In this type of impotence, veins may lock down and prevent blood flow to penis during erection. In some cases, veins may leak blood and thus, penis fail to maintain erection, resulting in venogenic impotence. This is the most common type of impotence and accounts about 30 – 70% of impotence cases.

Psychogenic Impotence:

Psychological reasons may also cause impotence. Men suffering from this impotence don’t have any physical problems that trigger impotence. Relationship problems, depression and stress cause psychogenic impotence.

Home Remedies for Sexual Impotence:

1. Treatment using Garlic

Garlic is believed to act as a tonic for loss of sexual power due to any particular cause, sexual weakness, impotency resulting from sexual overindulgence and nervous exhaustion. Two to Three cloves of raw garlic if chewed daily can make a world of difference.

2. Sexual Impotence treatment using Onion

Onion comes second to garlic; especially white variety of onion serves the best for treating impotency. It increases libido and strengthens the reproductory organs, therefore helping men to get over sexual impotency.

3. Sexual Impotence treatment using Carrot

Carrots are considered very valuable to cure impotency. For better results, about 150 gm of carrots, chopped finely, should be taken with a half-boiled egg, dipped in a tablespoon of honey, once daily for a month or two. This combination increases sexual stamina.

4. Sexual Impotence treatment using Lady’s Fingers

Lady’s Finger serves as another tonic to cure impotence. According to Ayurveda, persons who take five to ten grams of the root powder of this vegetable with a glass of milk and two teaspoons of ground mishri (rock sugar/rock candy) daily, will never lose sexual vigor.

5. Sexual Impotence treatment using Asparagus

Dried roots of Asparagus are highly recommended for impotence by Unani medicine. Fifteen grams of these roots boiled in one cup of milk should be taken twice daily.

6. Sexual Impotence treatment using Drumstick

A soup made with about fifteen grams of drumstick flowers boiled in 250 ml milk is very useful as a sexual tonic. It is also useful in functional barrenness in both men and women. The powder of the dry bark of drumstick tree (Horseradish tree) is also a valuable cure for impotence, premature ejaculation, and thinness of semen. Thirty grams of this powder, mixed with a tablespoon of honey, should be taken three times daily for a month.

7. Sexual Impotence treatment using Ginger

Half a teaspoon of ginger juice should be taken with a half-boiled egg and honey, once daily at night, for a month.

8. Sexual Impotence treatment using Dried Dates

Dried dates are a highly-strengthening food. Pounded and mixed with almonds, pistachio nuts, and quince seeds in equal quantities, about 100 gm should be taken daily as an effective medicine for increasing sexual power.

9. Sexual Impotence treatment using Raisins

Black raisins are useful for restoration of sexual vigor. They should be boiled with milk after being washed thoroughly in lukewarm water. This will make them puffed and sweet. Intake of this milk three times a day will surely be fruitful for impotency problems.

10. Fresh Fruit diet followed by a well-balanced diet

13. Cold hip bath

Primary instincts of life not just include hunger and sleep but also sex. There is no denial about it and there is absolutely nothing in not being upfront about it. While sex gives utmost satisfaction, inability to have a healthy sex life might lead not only to be an indicator of some physical disorder but also to a disturbed mental state.

Sexual activity demands a relaxed state of mind and complete concentration. But when tension takes over often this activity is dampened beyond repair. Sexual dysfunction is a crucial problem found commonly in case of men more than in women and it might take the form of impotence. If taken care at the initial stages sexual impotence can be dealt with healthy lifestyle.

Definition of Sexual Impotence:

“Impotence is the inability to maintain an erection of the penis for satisfactory sexual intercourse regardless of the status of ejaculation.”

Causes of Sexual Impotence:

• Diabetes
• Depression
• Alcoholism
• Tiredness
• Therapeutic use of Oestrogens
• Paralysis of parasympathetic nerves by drugs

Experts say, “Other causes of impotence include a devitalized condition of the system in general. The main problem of secondary impotence is the apprehension created by an earlier failure, which generates a good deal of anxiety for the next time. Impotence takes three forms. There is primary impotence when the man’s erectile dysfunction is there from the very beginning of sexual activity and he simply cannot have an erection. Secondary impotence is the commonest and this implies that the man can normally attain an erection but fails on one or more occasions in between normal activity. The third form is associated with advancing age.”
