Teen Binge Drinking On The Rise …

with one comment

A recent study showed that nearly 2 in every 3 teens indulged in binge drinking and are at a greater risk of other serious health problems. The CDC estimated that nearly 7.4 million high school students drink alcohol, including 2.6 million binge drinkers.

It was noted that about 64% of the drinkers admitted binge drinking, and have 5 or more drinks within a few hours. Teen binge drinkers were also more likely to smoke, use marijuana, cocaine, and other inhalants.

The study also showed that compared to nondrinkers, teen binge drinkers had indulged in more physical fights, attempted suicide and were more sexually active. They were also more likely to have been raped or subjected to dating violence in the past few months. What more, they also had worse grades and performed poorly academically.

Why Do Teens Drink: Teens usually start experimenting with alcohol for several reasons. The most common ones are :

  • They are curious about alcohol and its effects
  • To be among the ‘hip’ crowd and feel like ‘grown-ups’
  • If they have parents who drink
  • If their friends drink
  • To get a temporary high at parties
  • To deal with stress or tension, by forgetting the problems for a while

Some Advice For Teen Drinkers:

  • Alcohol can be disastrous for your health. Even smaller amounts of alcohol at a young age can be very damaging and can slowly addict you.
  • It can make you overweight and obese.
  • It gives you bad breath and bad skin.
  • It can slur your speech and make you clumsy. You don’t like people laughing at you, do you ???
  • Drinking doesn’t make you look cool, you atually act like a jerk when you drink. Imagine having someone to show you your way or asking them what you did last night when you were drunk.
  • If you drink to forget your problems, then you are mistaken. Your problems will still be the same when you sober up.
  • Drinking makes you totally out of control. That’s why drunkards are more prone to accidents and violence.
  • Since you are not in your proper senses when you drink, you can become easy targets for rape and sexual violence.
