Leucoderma is also called vitiligo. It is a disease that creates unsightly white patches and spots on the skin. This white spot or patch is called leucoderma. Literally, leucoderma means “white skin”. Leucoderma patches occur when there is loss of the pigment melanin, which provides color to the skin. The patch is initially small but spreads steadily all over the body. However, leucoderma is not a contagious or dangerous skin disease.
Leucoderma Causes
- Too much mental tension
- Acute or chronic gastric disorders
- Liver ailments like jaundice
- Typhoid
- Parasites or worms infecting the alimentary canal
- Perspiratory mechanism becomes defective
- Heredity is also a common factor
- Burn injuries
Symptoms of Leucoderma
- A small pale spot, which gradually transforms into patches
- The pale patches slowly become more and more white with time
- The enlarging spots gradually merge and form a big patch
- Increase in local sunburns
- Premature graying of hair
Tips to Prevent Leucoderma
- Try to be relaxed and avoid strain and stress
- Avoid hard soaps during bathing
- Bask in the early morning sun for a few minutes
- Avoid chemical-laden cosmetics that can trigger leucoderma
- Prevent iron deficiency by consuming green leafy veggies, lentils, cereals, liver and meat
- During leucoderma treatment, avoid consumption of salt and sodium
Home Remedies for Leucoderma
- Store cool water in a copper vessel during the night and drink it the next morning
- Ginger juice stimulates blood flow to the whitened skin spots
- Apply a poultice made from ginger leaves on the patches
- Eat plenty of figs and walnuts every day to treat leucoderma
- Grind Neem fruits, flowers and leaves and make a mixture. Take a teaspoon of this bitter powder with water every day
- Mix cucumber and alfalfa juice. Drink this mixed juice two times a day
- Butter milk is considered a useful treatment for leucoderma. Drink it every day
- Make a paste of black gram and apply on the impacted area to fight leucoderma
