Pimples on Tongue

Pimples on tongue may not be a bothersome condition but is very painful. Why is it painful? Imagine a bump on your tongue, not letting you to do the most essential activity to survive – eating. Even a single pimple on the tongue makes you to experience pain while eating food. Apart from this, it can also cause great discomfort while talking as well. Hence, it becomes imperative to find a solution for getting rid of pimples on tongue.

The severity of pain depends on the pimple size and the location. For example, a large pimple in the middle of the tongue causes intense pain. However, even a tiny pimple on the tip of the tongue causes mild discomfort while eating food.

Causes of Pimples on Tongue:

Pimples on skin can be tolerated while pimples on tongue is a bothersome condition and the underlying cause must be detected to clear the pimples. Following are some of the causes of acne on tongue:

Hormonal Imbalance:

Fluctuations in hormone levels can result in the formation of pimples. Hormonal changes occur during pregnancy and hence cause acne breakouts on face and back area too.

Food Allergy:

Food allergies may cause painful pimples. It is observed that people eating high acidic foods or oily foods such as fried chips are more prone to acne on tongue.

Canker sores:

This is another condition which leads to the formation of tongue acne. A person afflicted with canker sores shows the formation of white lesions on the tongue which causes burning sensation. Initially, canker sore appears as a white bump on tongue, before it turns to an open wound.

Tongue Injury:

Biting the tongue unknowingly cannot be tolerated by the delicate skin. Usually it happens when a person is having lunch or dinner while watching television.

Oral thrush:

An yeast infection can also trigger pimple on the tongue. Acne on tongue due to oral thrush looks like a white bump and causes much irritation. Yeast infection is not only restricted to tongue but also spreads to the roof of the mouth and inner cheeks.

Remedies to Get Rid of Pimples on Tongue:

The problem that you experience while treating pimples on tongue is that you can’t apply topical ointments which you use for facial acne. Even dermatologists cannot prescribe any medications until the condition is severe. Hence, it best to deal with home remedies. Following are some simple and easy ways to treat tongue acne:

  • The simplest and easiest way is gargling with warm, salty water for about 2–3 minutes in a day. It not only reduces the pain quickly but also prevents it from spreading.
  • Gargling with the medicated mouthwash is also very effective in reducing the bumps. The components of the mouthwash destroy the bacteria causing acne and give relief.
  • Before going to bed chew fresh mint leaves to reduce the size of the pimple by the next morning.
  • Make a paste with hydrogen peroxide and baking soda and apply this paste on the pimples. This mixture kills the bacteria causing acne.
  • Milk of magnesia provides relief from pain and reduces the soreness of pimples. In order to use this, dab a cotton swab into milk of magnesia and spread it on the tongue 2–3 times a day.
  • In most of the cases, it has been observed that vitamin B deficiency triggers tongue acne. Hence, consumption of vitamin B supplements for a week alleviates the condition. However, it is must to consult a dermatologist before using any medication.

In general, pimples on tongue disappear in a few days. If home remedies fail to improve the condition, consult a dermatologist. If you are bothered with frequent acne breakouts, you must take certain measures for preventing them. Eat a well balanced diet which consists of lots of fresh vegetables and fruits. Also drink plenty of water to eliminate toxins from the body. Avoid fatty and spicy foods and any foods which can cause allergies. Use mouthwash to maintain good oral hygiene.

    I noticed that when i eat hot food e.g eggs daily 2 to 3 times. Pimples on tongue appears. same if i eat too much chocklate these pimples appears. and remediy is eat cold food e.g fruits water mellon, Leeche, and do not eat hot fruits e.g mangos and stuff like that. SALT + Water is best and it will remove with in 2 to 3 days.

    I get the whitened pimples on my tongue quite frequently and it’s starting to get quite annoying…They are so painful and usually vary in size…It usually is only in one area at a time but I will try some of the recommendations because those little suckers hurt….

    I put ice on it and it helps with the pain and it goes away faster. I just put the ice in a zip lock bag and keep it on the pimple for a little while. So far that has been the best thing that works for me.
