Treatment
Follow the recommended lifestyle for avoiding cardio-vascular disease, paying particular attention to exercise, stress-management and dietary dos and don’ts. It is possible that supplements will then be unnecessary.
Diet
Follow the basic cardiac diet, and bear in mind that the following foods reduce cholesterol :
Supplements which lower cholesterol
Vitamin C
– 1 g, three times daily, or more often.
Niacin
– 100 mg, twice daily with food.
Vitamin B6
– 50 mg, twice daily.
Calcium and magnesium
– 500 mg daily, as citrate or aspartate.
Chromium polynicotinate
– 100 mcg twice daily.
Selenium
– 150 mcg daily.
L acidophilus
daily, increases bile synthesis, thereby increasing cholesterol excretion.
EPA
– 1 g daily is enough, if eating oily fish. This oil has a much more dramatic effect on triglycerides than cholesterol, although it markedly raises the healthy HDL.
