Posture. You hear the word and immediately you think of a set of rules: “ shoulders back, tummy in, backside in, head up.”
Well, forget the rules. Good posture doesn’t come naturally to most of us. Yet there is a posture natural to the body, one that acknowledges its design and recognizes the force of gravity.
Posture is dynamic, too. You need to consider not only the way you stand but also the way you position your body each time you move. The way you cradle the telephone between your shoulder and your ear when you’re standing at your sink washing the dishes – that’s posture , too. Poor posture.
Your spine was designed to balance your head over your rib cage, and your rib cage over your pelvis, without placing undue stress on itself. The S shape in the spine helps achieve this balance. That’s why it’s important to maintain the natural curves in your back.
What are the components of good posture? Your head is over your shoulders. Your shoulders are not thrown back. There is a natural curve in your lower back. Your pelvis is level, not tipped. Your weight is centered over both legs.
