What are Super Foods?

Scientists have found that some foods which we call “Super foods” contain amazing disease preventing, health-giving nutritional factors such as dietary fiber, omega -3 fatty acids and beta- carotene. Many of these super foods are also low in calories and fats.

We call them super foods because each does triple duty or better in the disease prevention category. Choose a banana over a couple of cookies as your afternoon snack, for instance, and you supply yourself with essential nutrients that researchers have linked to lowered incidence of hypertension, increased protection against cancer, and enhancement of the immune system. You won’t have to worry that the banana will push up your blood cholesterol level, either; only 4 % of a banana’s calories come from fat.

Low fat yogurt and broccoli happen to be the champions of the super foods list. Why? Their nutritional content makes them valuable allies against cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, heart disease, stroke, and osteoporosis.

Of course, broccoli and yogurt do not make a complete diet. Each food has its strong points. Cover all your nutritional bases by eating a variety of these foods each week.
