Trimelhylaminuria is a rare genetic condition in which the person suffers from the fishy body odor. This condition do not cause any harm to the physical health of the body but the person suffering from this condition will experience social hardships and emotional distress due to the presence of the bad smell.
Symptoms Of Trimelhylaminuria:
The symptoms of Trimelhylaminuria includes:
- The sweat, urine, reproductive products, breath all give off a strong fishy body odor.
- There are no physical symptoms as such.
- The condition is more prominently present in females than in males. This happens because in females the situation worsens due to the presence of female sex hormones like progesterone and/ or estrogen.
- The situations worsens around puberty, when women begins with her menstrual cycle, take contraceptive pills and around menopause.
Treatment Of Trimelylaminuria:
No cure of this condition has been diagnosed so far. But there are few steps which can be followed to get rid of the fishy smell. These steps are:
- Avoid foods like legumes, egg, fish, certain meats and other foods that contain carnitine, choline, sulfur and nitrogen.
- Intake of low doses of antibiotics will help in reducing the amount of bacteria present in gut.
- Intake of charcoal tablets can be of some help in reducing the fishy odor.
Actually, the patients suffering from this condition are suffer from psychological hardships which can be seen as the result of bad odor. So, under these circumstances it is recommended that the patient undergoes some counselling session, in which measures to control the disorders are discussed. Such sessions prove to be very beneficial for children and also the young people.
