The thyroid is an important organ located in the interiors of the neck. It controls the energy conversion in our body. It also controls the response of our body to chemical substances called Hormones. It carries out these processes by in turn producing its own hormones called Thyroxine (T4) and Triiodothyronine. But for some unknown reasons, the body stops producing these hormones. It leads to one of the least understood disorder of the thyroid. It is called Chronic Thyroiditis. This article tries to gain further insight about the ailment.
What is Chronic Thyroiditis:
Here the thyroid swells and do not remain effective in its functioning. It is a disorder. For some unknown reasons, our own body turns hostile. It stops producing chemical substances called hormones required for necessary functioning of our body. In this way, it is different from diseases. In diseases, the illness is caused by harmful organisms or substances outside our body. Disorders caused by hostile activities of our own body are called auto-immune disorders.
Symptoms of Chronic Thyroiditis:
- Constipation
- Stiffness of joint
- Difficulty in concentration or thinking
- Unexplainable Weight gain
- Swelling of face
- Hair loss
- Rashes
- Tiredness
- Intolerance to cold
- Small size of the thyroid
- Heavy and irregular periods
Important Facts to be known about Chronic Thyroiditis:
- It can occur at any age, but is common among middle aged women.
- 0.1 – 5 percent adults are affected by this disorder in western countries.
- The disorder is diagnosed very slowly over months or years.
- Thyroid hormone replacement therapy is beneficial. After this treatment technique is followed, the disorder grows slowly.
- There is no cure to prevent this disorder completely, yet.
- In very rare cases, type 1 diabetes can cause this disorder.
- It can also lead to thyroid cancer in very little known cases.
