Sugar is a very complex molecule. As the structure of the molecule changes, various forms of sugar are formed with different properties. One such form of sugar with realtively simple molecular structure is the Fructose. It is mostly found in fruits, vegetables and honey. This article tries to understand the role of fructose content in the body.
Statistics of Fructose content in Fruits and Vegetables:
| S.No. | Fruits and Vegetables | Fractose | Fractose/Glucose Ratio |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. | Apple | 5.9 | |
| 2. | Pear | 6.2 | |
| 3. | Red Pepper sweet | 2.3 | |
| 4. | Carrot | 0.6 | |
Fructose content in the body:
When the fructose enters the body along with other sugar forms, it has to get absorbed in the blood. This process of absorption of fructose is carried out by a particular organ in the body. Fructose is transported to the organ by a substance called GLUT. It acts as the transporter of the various sugar forms. But there exists a stiff competition between various sugar forms to arrange a GLUT for their transportation. This leads to shortage of GLUT transporters in the body.
When the fructose do not get absorbed in the blood because of lack of GLUT transporters, different ailments crop up in the body. Some of the problems are obesity, risk of heart disease, gas, bloating, flatulence and even diarrhea.
Fructose content and Diabetes:
Fructose is often recommended for diabetics. It is sweeter and easily digestible when compared to than other forms of sugar. Moreover, the beta cells of the pancreas which produce insulin do not require much of GLUT transporters. Research studies show that if fructose is taken before the meals it can keep the sugar level in check after the meals too.
According to a research finding in the University of Florida, intake of 90 grams of fructose per day can cause diabets and kidney diseases. In america, the consumption of this sugar form from all the food items put together is 74 grams per day. This quantity is sufficient enough to take us to the stage of pre-diabetes.
