Rubella is a viral infection which the baby acquires from their mothers during pregnancy. It is primarily a maternal infection which is transmitted to the baby. It is believed that rubella invades the respiratory tract of the mother from where it is transmitted to all the other including the placenta.
It from placenta that it is transmitted to the baby. Baby acquire the infection which shows its symptoms and it will suffer from number of abnormalities which can ultimately result in death in uterus itself.
Signs And Symptoms Of Rubella Infection:
In Pregnant Women:
- Symptoms will be noticed in the respiratory tract.
- Lymphadenopathy
- Fever
- Maculopapular rash
In Fetus:
- Multiple abnormalities
- Death in utero
- Most of the abnormalities includes meningoencephalitis, intrauterine growth restriction, retinopathy, cataracts, hearing loss, cardiac defects, bone radioucencies, hepatosplenomelagy.
- Dermal erythropoiesis which can result in lesions of bluish red color on the skin, thrmbocytopenia with purpura, intestinal pneumonia, adenopathy.
Treatment:
No specific treatment is there to treat this condition. The women who get infected with this disease in the beginning of the pregnancy must be informed of its consequences before hand only. Immune globulin if given in the early stages of pregnancy can do some prevention but not difference can be
done.
Prevention:
Prevention is the means to protect mother from this infection. So, it must be made sure that lady gets the vaccine of rubella before getting pregnant. Once vaccine is given lady must not conceive for at least one month or so. This is done to ensure that antibodies for this disease are formed. This will prevent both the mother and her baby from the infection.
Another way is that the vaccine must be given to all the young children along with other vaccines of measles and mumps in between the age of 12 – 15 years. This will prepare the body of all the females from younger time itself to fight from the infection.
