Gestational diabetes develops when the levels of glucose and other symptoms of glucose rises in a pregnant lady who has not suffered from diabetes previously. Gestational diabetes occur due to the blocking effects of hormones on insulin which creates a situation called as ‘Insulin Resistance’.
The symptoms of gestational diabetes disappear once delivery is done. Although, such ladies run a risk of developing diabetes at the later stage of their life. Especially those who were overweight before pregnancy.
Causes Of Gestational Diabetes:
The actual cause of gestational diabetes is not known but some theories still exist. These are:
- Placenta is the chord with which the baby is attached with the mother. This placenta supplies blood and nutrition to the baby and also secretes number of hormones which acts as a blocking agent for insulin. This generally starts 20-24 weeks after the pregnancy begins.
- With the growing pregnancy, the placenta also grows and it secretes more and more hormones which creates a greater resistance for the insulin.
- When the amount of insulin reduces the pancreases produce it in additional amount to overcome the resistance but when the amount of insulin is not enough to overcome the resistance gestational diabetes are caused.
Complications Caused Due To Gestational Diabetes:
There are various complications which can be caused to the baby due to gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes generally results in birth defects.the mothers having gestational diabetes undergo a number of chemical imbalances such as low serum calcium levels and low serum magnesium levels and many others. All these result in deformities. Some of these deformities are:
-
Macrosomia:
It is the birth defect in which the baby is larger than the normal size.
-
Birth Injury:
This is caused generally due to the large size of the baby.
-
Hypoglycemia:
It is the condition in which low blood sugar is maintained and the baby born to a mother having gestational diabetes faces this problem immediately after its birth.
-
Respiratory Distress:
Due to a large amount of insulin and glucose in the body the baby is not able to perform respiratory process properly and thus it faces this problem.
