This is a complex syndrome which is found commonly in females. The child develops normally for 6 months and then the disease manifests in the age of 6 months to 4 years. It is progressive neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by acquired micro cephalic, severe dementia, autism, purposeless hands movements, characteristic hand wringing stereotypy, and jerky ataxia of the trunk. Hypotonia (loss of muscle) is the first symptom.
Who Discovered Rett’s Syndrome:
This disorder was first described by Austrian neurologist Andreas Rett in 1966, but was not known for next two decade. Later a report by Hag berg et al describing 35 affecting girls made it known world wide.
The disease affects 1 in every 10,000 – 15,000 female lives. The gene causing the disorder has not been yet discovered.
Rett Syndrome Treatments:
The treatment for Rett Syndrome is summarized in following points:
- Those who have seizure activity, the medical management may include administration of anticonvulsant medications like, carbamezepine or valproic acid. In addition, concurrent therapy will help in reducing seizure activity.
- In take of necessary nutrients and maintain adequate weight may result in improved growth, interaction and attentiveness.
- Appropriate nutrition and calorie in take is of utmost important.
Regular monitoring of Solaris is of utmost important, as it ensures prompt detection, and early appropriate treatment such as physical therapy, the use of braces and casts, or surgery
Physical Therapy:
Physical therapy may help to improve balance, and the ability to walk, maintain flexibility and strengthen muscles. Physical therapy will also prevent deformities such as reducing joint contracture. Occupational therapy will be helpful in improving meaningful hand movements. Similarly speech therapy will improve patient’s interaction by providing nonverbal communication methods.
