Foot Corns

Foot corns are the horny overgrowth of the skin that appears in any of foot due to excessive pressure. Foot corns are thick skinned cone shaped mass pointing down towards the skin. Foot corns could be either hard or soft corns. Hard foot corns are normally located on the outer surface of the little toe or on the upper surface of the other toes. Soft foot corns are found in between the toes and are soft skinned overgrowth.

Why Do Foot Corns Appear?

The major cause of the foot corn is the increase pressure in the area combined with some friction. As the result the portion gets thickened and swells up to protect itself. The causes for increase in the pressure are many like:

  • Footwear of tight fitting
  • Wearing high heels
  • Sweat trapped in between the toes and figures
  • Toe deformity like hammer toes in such cases the top of the toes is an area of increased pressure.

Treatment of Foot Corns:

Foot corns could be by taking the regular care of them. Some of the major initiatives which could be taken to treat them are:

  • Remove the causes of pressure such as tight fitting shoes, high heels etc.
  • Padding should be used below the foot to avoid excessive pressure.
  • Always keep your toes soft and greasy to avoid the friction of the skin.
  • Women must avoid wearing high heels for a longer duration of time.
  • Always keep your feet relaxed by soaking them in the warm water and Epsom salt for few minutes at least three times a day this will help to soften the corn.
  • Pumice stone can be used on the corn which will file it down and it will begin to remove part or all of it.
  • Lanolin enriched lotion can be applied on the skin around the corn. This will work underneath the skin and help in softening the corn.
