Little Known Ways to Prevent Dementia

Researchers believe that a right diet and exercise can help prevent dementia. This claim supports the study that began in the 1960s to finally reveal that people with pot bellies in their midlife were 3 times more at a risk of developing dementia in their 70s or 80s.

The 1960 study also reported the doubling of the dementia risk in people who weighed normal but had larger waists. Researchers thereby emphasized that it is even more important for people to realize where they carry the weight (fat or calories).

The latest research (related to belly fat and dementia) has been published in the journal named “Neurology” where the researchers explain that pot bellies in midlife can increase the risk of dementia in old age. However, the study does not reveal as to why the risk of dementia increases with larger waists and neither does it give any clue about reducing the risk of dementia by losing calories.

The research, like other studies, merely relates cardiovascular risks with body fat in one’s midlife, which in turn is assumed to affect the brain and cause dementia or the alzheimer’s disease.

What is the right diet?

By a right diet, the researchers meant a well-balanced diet that should generally contain leafy and bright fruits and vegetables. That does not undermine the body’s requirement for proteins and carbohydrates all well-balanced and eaten in correct quantities.

Your right diet should include:

  • Whole grains
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Lean protein foods (egg whites, chicken without skin, tuna canned in water, etc)

What exercises can prevent dementia?

Researchers claim that there is no specific exercise to ward off dementia and neither are their specific exercises that can make you lose body fat from one area. The mantra to keeping healthy and free from diseases is to balance cardiovascular exercises with strength-training exercises.

Experts assert that beginners should engage in 30 minutes of moderate strength-training exercises each day like – leg pressing, quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, seated row exercises, etc.

Others Exercises

No matter what exercises you do, experts say that you should enjoy them to the brim.

Some other exercises to keep fit and healthy include:

  • Jogging
  • Walking
  • Swimming
  • Tennis

Medical experts are of the opinion that losing 2 inches around the waist (with the right diet and exercise) can reduce the risk of diseases like diabetes and hypertension by 50%.
