Alcohol Prohibition Perpetuating Marijuana Use

A study published in the Australian Journal of Rural Healthy states that restrictions on alcohol use has lead to a shift towards marijuana smoking. The study which was conducted on an aboriginal community in Australia has revealed disturbing trends of indigenous people resorting to either forms of toxic abuse which are intricately related to poverty, ill-health and lack of equal opportunities.

Statistics from the country reveal that about 11% of the urban population in Australia resort to marijuana use. Interestingly, the figure doubles to 22% for the indigenous people. Reports suggest that marijuana use maybe even higher in remote indigenous communities.

Authors from the Menzies School of Health Research claim that the trend to shift to marijuana from alcohol has arisen because there are no integrated programs for alerting the indigenous communities about the harmful consequences of alcohol abuse.

Alcohol has been banned in these indigenous communities without any efforts to address the social causes of indigenous health. As a result, marijuana markets are flourishing within aboriginal boundaries with youths and adults thronging this carnival of marijuana weeds.
