Experts from the University of Alberta, Canada opine that children who eat low calorie food tend to overeat. This continuous tendency is marked by obesity when they grow up. The study was initially carried out by the Canadian researchers on young rats which were fed with low calorie substitutes.
The results showed that these young rats began to overeat irrespective of their thin and lean appearance or inclination to be obese. The tendency to overeat was not reported in adult rats.
How low calories encourage obesity?
Researchers concluded on the note that low calorie foods check the function of the taste buds to regulate the calorie intake of food. Overeating follows as a result of the inability of the tongue to identify different tastes.
This supported the study with the older rats not giving in to overeating. This happened on account of the fact that older rats relied on their tastes to identify healthy and energy-laden food.
This study helped in arriving on the point that low calorie foods do not help in reducing weight but instead can be the underlying reason for adult obesity. Parents should therefore ensure that their children eat nutritious and healthy diet that include proteins, carbohydrates, calcium, minerals and vitamins, to compensate for their daily activities.
