It’s common knowledge that – your hands carry germs. We hear this from our mothers everyday – wash your hands! Here we give you some important hand washing facts most of you may not know.
- With hand washing you can avoid getting colds, flu, staph infection or intestinal illness and also avoid spreading those illnesses to others.
- Soap and clean running water are necessary for adequate hand washing. Warm water is preferable. Lather up and scrub for 20 seconds.
- Do you know how soap works? The soap mixes with the skin oil, and it loosens grease and dirt that carry germs.
- Plain soaps are better than antibacterial soaps.
- Soap and water do better to clean your hands. But if they are not available, you can use an alcohol-based gel.
- Wash your hands often. Normally one touches his/her eyes, nose and mouth at least 200 times a day. This makes germs get into your body.
- Important times to wash your hands – before preparing or eating food, after diapering a child, after going to the bathroom, before and after caring for any patient, after blowing your nose or coughing, and after handling an animal.
