A new study shows that older adults who take Folic Acid supplements regularly are less prone to hearing problems. It has been observed that folic acid actually slows age-related hearing loss and prevents other health problems like stroke and heart disease.
Folic acid has already been added to the U.S. flour to combat folic-acid deficiency that can cause birth defects.
The study was conducted on 728 Dutch men and women aged between 50 to 70. Researchers at Wageningen University, Netherlands suggest that by fortifying flour with folic acid, nations might lessen their citizens’ age-related hearing loss.
You can take a daily multivitamin that has 0.4 mg of folic acid. But avoid taking more than one multivitamin a day, as too much of some vitamins can cause serious health problems. It is always safer to include natural sources of vitamins in your food, than taking supplements.
Natural sources of folic acid include dark green vegetables such as spinach, brocolli, peas, and brussel sprouts. Beans, whole grain breads, fortified cereals, oatmeal, mushrooms, corn, asparagus, lentils, orange juice, beef and liver are also good sources.
