Tinnitus is often associated with hearing loss or inner-ear damage from excessively loud noise. In this condition, you can sense noise in your ear and head, such as ringing, buzzing, roaring, whistling or hissing. It involves the annoying sensation of hearing sounds in the ear when there is no external sound present.
Prior to any treatment for tinnitus, you need to have a thorough examination and evaluation done by your otolaryngologist. It is essential to understand the nature and cause of tinnitus in each patient.
While there’s no total-cure for tinnitus, there are some techniques you can use for reducing the severity of noise and increasing your tolerance. But talk to your doctor before trying these techniques:
1. Avoid possible irritants: Tinnitus can get aggravated by loud noises, alcohol, tobacco, nicotine, caffeine (coffee, tea, colas), tonic water (quinine) and excessive doses of aspirin. So avoid all these to reduce the severity of Tinnitus.
2. Avoid exposure to loud sounds and noise by covering up: Avoid loud noise at all costs. Choose quiet setting, with a fan, soft music or low-volume radio static to help mask the noise from tinnitus. Some people may benefit from tinnitus maskers also. Tinnitus maskers are hearing-aid like devices that produce a more pleasant noise.
3. Control your blood pressure: Get your blood pressure checked at regular intervals. Take your doctor’s help to control it if it is high.
4. Cut down on salt: Decrease your intake of salt as salt is known to impair blood circulation.
5. Manage stress: Stress makes tinnitus worse. So manage stress through relaxation therapy or exercise to provide some relief. It is important to get adequate rest and avoid fatigue. Concentration and relaxation exercises can reduce the intensity of tinnitus in some patients.
6. Exercise everyday: Exercise daily to improve the circulation in your body.
7. Get a good hearing aid: Hearing aids can amplify outside sounds and make the tinnitus noise less obvious.
8. Maintain good hygiene: Earwax buildup may worsen tinnitus by reducing your ability to hear outside noises and amplify internal noises. So keep your ears clean at all times.
