The British government announced on monday that it is going to raise the legal age for buying cigarettes from 16 to 18. The new move is expected to come into effect in the coming months.
So the legal age for buying cigarettes and alcohol will now be the same. The goverment hopes that the new law will make it easier for shop workers to spot under-age customers and deny them any tobacco. Around 9 percent of British 11 to 15-year-olds indulge in smoking. And there are around 106,000 people of all ages who die from smoking-related illnesses in Britain each year.
The law change is aimed at reducing the number of teenagers who smoke. The new announcement was welcomed by campaigners but some said that more had to be done to punish retailers who sell to under-age teenagers.
