Shocking : Teens Getting A High From Cough Syrup And PainKillers

The annual study by the National Institute on Drug Abuse showed that teens are increasingly using legal drugs like painkillers and mood stimulants to get a high, and they are using cough syrup as well. It was found that a growing number of teens were popping prescription painkillers like OxyContin and Vicodin and stimulants like Ritalin to get a high.

The study showed that 1 in every 14 high school teens had used cold medicine ‘fairly recently’ to get a high. The study found about 1 in 10 high school teens have abused the painkiller Vicodin and Walters. The study also found that a record 36 million Americans have abused prescription drugs at least once in their lifetime.

The kids may be taking the pills from their parents’ medicine cabinets without sufficient knowledge about the drug. Teens turning to cough syrup is particularly alarming, because the medicine is cheap and easy to get. Most teens use cold medicine that contains dextromethorphan, which is commonly known as ‘Dex’ or ‘Skittles’.

People need to understand that overdosing and using without prescription can be dangerous, which are otherwise safe and legal drugs. And parents need to throw away the pills that are no longer being used. Parents also need to explain the dangers of using painkillers and cough syrup, in this manner to their kids.
