We use the 5 senses – sight, hearing, touch, smell and taste to perceive and feel the world around us. But these senses decline with age and we often hear people complaining of a bad taste in the mouth, or inability to smell the rich coffee aroma.
Exercising your senses and taking timely action can lower the risk. You can keep your senses sharp by these simple tricks:
1. Sight:
Working at a computer all day long, watching your fav. T.V shows for hours on end and driving a car can cause excessive eye dryness and blurry vision.
To solve this problem, take blinking breaks throughout the day. It encourages tear production and refreshes your dull eyes. Also do some ‘palming’ to soothe your tired eyes. Rub your palms to heat them and cup your palms over your eyes for a few minutes. Repeat several times.
Eat foods rich in healthy nutrients, like carrots, green leafy vegetables, fish, nuts, seeds and fresh fruits. Always cover your eyes with sunglasses when going out and do outdoor activities early in the morning, when pollution is lesser. Eat a daily multivitamin containing vitamins B1 (thiamin) and B2 (riboflavin).
Do some eye exercises like follow a goldfish swimming around a bowl. Get more tips at Eye Exercises.
2. Hearing:
Exercise and stimulate your eardrums by listening to music. Music can be a tool to fine-tune your ears but the trick is maintaining the proper volume. You should be able to carry on a normal conversation and regularly listen to one instrument.
Avoid loud noise whenever you can. When you can’t avoid noise exceeding 85 decibels, at a party, in an aeroplane or a subway train (where it is about 90 decibels), wear earplugs or earmuffs.
Train your ears by concentrating on what you’re hearing and identifying the different kinds of melodies. Try singling out the different instruments.
3. Touch:
Keep your hands soft at all times because the rougher your skin is, the more difficult it is to sense touch. So massage with a rich cream everyday to keep your nerve endings moist and sensitive.
Get more skin-to-skin contact. Hold hands with your partner, have sex, go for a massage, pedicure or manicure. You can also go for a swim in bracingly cold water once in a while.
Wear gloves instead of being barehanded when practising your games like batting, serving etc. Placing material between your skin and the object you are holding will force your receptors to work harder.
4. Smell:
The sense of smell deteriorates with age. And by the time you reach the age of 65, your smelling ability will be reduced by half.
Take a deep whiff of a pleasurable smell every day, like your favorite perfume or flower. Smell a great tasting pizza, fried chicken or peppermint candy. Scents like peppermint and cinnamon increase the brain waves and helps you stay awake and alert. Do this consistently for a few months, this will cause your body to create new scent receptors.
Stop smoking as cigarette smoke kills essential receptors, whether you are an active smoker or passive.
5. Taste:
Chew your food properly and sense every bit of food that you put into your mouth. This unlocks more flavor molecules and holding the food in your mouth for a few seconds ensures that these molecules contact with your tastebuds.
Try tasting foods such as horseradish and dark chocolate, which have intense tastes. These stimulate your taste receptors more quickly.
Give your tastebuds a break by abstaining from your favorite food like salty, sweet and sour foods, for 2 weeks. If you don’t eat a particular flavor for a while, your receptors for that flavor get refreshed and rejuvenated.
Mix and combine flavors. Add curry or cinnamon to your dishes.
