old1.jpgAccording to a new study, if older people are given training in mental functions, their brain remains sharper for years. Mind exercises really help keep seniors sharp for years to come.

Brief sessions of brain exercise can have long-lasting benefits, and helps people stay mentally fit for at least five years.

It was noted that for people of around 73 years, just 10 sessions helped keep their brains sharp. The study was led by Sherry Willis, a human-development professor at Penn State University. And you can get more details about it in Wednesday’s Journal of the American Medical Association.

The study was conducted on nearly 3,000 men and women of 6 different six cities, who were randomly assigned six-week training sessions in memory, reasoning and speedy mental processing.

The study shows that mental exercise is just like physical exercise. Older adults can improve their cognitive abilities, by keeping their brains active. The study shows promise as a non-drug treatment to combat mental decline in aging. And even the medications available today produce only low to moderate improvements in mental function with adverse side effects, so this bit of research can come as a huge relief to aging adults, who often complain of mental decline.
