L.A Hospital Closes Baby And Children Units Due To Bacteria Outbreak

The Neonatal and intensive care pediatric units of White Memorial Center Hospital near downtown Los Angeles, California, are closed because of a bacteria outbreak that has killed one baby and infected 6 others.

The bacterium called ‘Pseudomonas aeruginosa’ is not usually harmful to healthy people, but it causes infections to people with weak immune systems, such as premature infants, kids and elderly people who are already sick, or people with AIDS.

The uninfected kids have been moved to separate units whisch are safer. Mothers who are due to give birth at the hospital are advised to discuss with their doctor whether to go ahead or choose another hospital.

It is believed that the source of the infection is a laryngoscope blade, that was not cleaned properly. Laryngoscope is a device used to examine the throat (larynx).

Hospitals are advised to clean the blade immediately after use with a brush and hot soapy water to remove secretions. Then disinfect it by soaking in an antiseptic solution.
