After days of speculation, it is now believed that Lettuce was the most likely source of E. coli outbreak of Taco Bell group of restaurants.
Since the outbreaks appear to be over, tracing the actual source of outbreak is difficult. Earlier Taco Bell had said that contaminated green onions were responsible for food poisoning. But follow-up tests failed to confirm this. And now the culprit seems to be lettuce.
Dr. Christopher Braden, a medical epidemiologist with the CDC said, “That I would say is the most likely vehicle. I would warn we are not done with the investigation”.
Investigators even tested cheddar cheese and ground beef as well. Taco Bell’s menu, often offers various combinations of the same ingredients, making it difficult to pinpoint the exact source of the contamination.
But now the evidence that lettuce was responsible seems statistical, because it was the only item that most victims reported eating.
