Christmas is a time for partying and feasting. Enjoy all the festivities of the season without too much impact on your health and waistline. You should be able to indulge yourself without feeling guilty later on. Here are some tips to maintain your health during christmas season:
1. Be physically active.
There will be several Christmas special programmes on the TV, but you don’t need to sink in the sofa all day long. It will only make you a couch potato. Instead take the whole family out for a walk, may be after dinner to aid digestion. Be active and play outdoor games, ride bikes, play football or Frisbees.
2. Go easy on the booze.
Don’t indulge in mindless drinking, just because it is a time to celebrate. Alcohol can add empty calories to your body. There will be wine and brandy with each meal. Keep a tab on how much you are drinking, and cut down on your intake of colas, alcohol and wine as much as you can.
3. Do not eat too much.
Keep a count of the calories you are eating. Excessive stuffing will add pounds, and may cause indigestion and heartburn. Instead of gorging too much during dinner, go with your normal appetite, and do not fill up on snacks and appetizers beforehand. Have a little amount of dessert at each relative’s place, to avoid hurting anyone. If you know that you are going to eat a lot at dinner party, try eating less during the day and do some extra cardio excercises.
Christmas is a time to have those tasty nuts, chocolates, pies and cheese straws, but do not eat too much just because it’s there. Drink a lot of water before parties to make you feel fuller or suck on some strong mint as an appetite suppressant during parties.
4. Exercise during christmas season.
You know that you will eat a lot during christmas, so do some exercises and cardios each day to burn out the excess calories.
5. Keep colds and coughs at bay.
Colds and other infections are rife during Christmas season, because of travelling and overexposure. Eat a healthy diet to minimise your risk and maintain a healthy immune system. Do not smoke or use any drugs, to minimise your chances of infection from any kind of viruses.
6. Take proper rest and sleep.
Christmas may be a time for partying and letting yourself free, but it is important to get enough sleep and rest to maintain your health. Sleep for 8 hours peacefully every night, otherwise you will feel irritable, dull and lazy the next day.
7. Plan everything beforehand and don’t stress yourself.
You may have to a long ‘to-do list’ during christmas – shopping, cooking, cleaning, visiting relatives and friends etc. Plan all these things beforehand in order to avoid last-minute stress and tension. And remember, Christmas is just one day, you need not stress yourself so much.
8. Play mind games.
Instead of sitting near the T.V for hours on end, keep your mind active by playing games like Trivial Pursuit or Charades. This is also a great way of bonding with your family and friends during the festive season.
9. Eat fruits and vegetables.
During christmas, you are overindulging and partying, so you need more vitamins and minerals. Eat atleast five fruits a day to maintain your health.
10. Do something for others.
Apart from giving gifts to your family and friends, do something for others this christmas. Invite your poor neighbour for dinner or give some goodies to the lesser fortunate people.
