10 Ways To Take Care Of Your Teeth

teeth.jpgSome people complain that their teeth are ‘wearing away’ or becoming more sensitive to cold. These symptoms are due to erosion and abrasion of the tooth surface. Vigorous brushing with hard-bristle brushes can wear away the tooth enamel and cause the gum line to recede. You need to visit a dentist every 3 months and get your teeth checked for any cavities or any other problem.

Here are some tips to prevent further damage to your pearly whites:

1. Don’t brush with a hard-bristled brush. Use a soft-bristled regular or electric toothbrush. You need to brush with light pressure, using small, circular motions. Be very gentle when you are brushing along your gum line. Do not brush for more than 2 minutes. Change your toothbrush every 3 months.

2. Avoid acidic beverages and aerated drinks. They are bad for your teeth and stains them. Cut down on your intake of tea and coffee, as these too stain your teeth.

3. If you still prefer aerated drinks, you should use a straw to help the liquid pass without touching your teeth. Drink it promptly, rather than sipping.

4. Do not brush after drinking a high-acid beverage or aerated drink. You can just rinse thoroughly with water or a good mouthwash.

5. Rinse your mouth properly with water after every meal and snacks. Do not leave any bits and particles stuck between your teeth. You can floss your teeth to keep them clean.

6. Don’t get your teeth cleaned professionally for more than 3 times a year. The polishes used by some dentists can be extremely abrasive. And so are some whiteners.

7. If you have the habit of grinding your teeth at night, talk to your dentist about fitting a retainer like appliance that can protect your teeth.

8. If you suffer from dry mouth, you can stimulate the saliva flow in your mouth by sucking on sugar-free hard candy or chewing gum containing the sweetener xylitol. You can also eat fibrous food like carrots or celery.

9. If erosion and abrasion have made your teeth highly sensitive to cold or other stimuli, you can switch to a desensitizing toothpaste. If your exposed roots have also become extremely sensitive, ask your dentist about covering them with a resin or composite.

10. Always rinse your mouth with water after eating chocolate or any sweet food. Never go to sleep without a rinse after having a chocolate.
