Western Diet Pattern Is Linked To Colorectal Cancer

wes.jpgEuropeans tend to follow a faulty diet pattern that makes them easily susceptible to diseases and illnesses. A recent study in France suggests that the high calorie and low fibre dietary pattern associated with the Western diet, causes an increased risk of colorectal cancer in Westerners. Researchers at the Institute Gustave Roussy are studying the link between dietary patterns and the incidence of colorectal tumours in people.

It was observed that people with a dietary pattern closely matching the ‘Western diet’, which is rich in processed foods, meat and dairy, and alcohol had an increased risk of colorectal cancer.

There are 363,000 new cases of colorectal cancer every year in Europe. But 80 per cent of colorectal cancers can be prevented by dietary changes. Colorectal Cancer is one of the most curable cancers if diagnosis is made early.

The Western dietary pattern is also responsible for the obesity epidemic, particularly in children. Western diets tend to cause hormonal imbalances that encourage overeating.

The solution would be to eat a fibre rich diet, including several fruits and vegetables and cutting down the intake of meat, processed foods, fatty snacks and alcohol.
