Physical Activity May Reduce The Risk Of Cancer

ex.jpgSeveral health promotion campaigns may have helped in making the general public aware of the benefits of physical activity and exercise for improving or maintaining health. And most of these campaigns are focused on the importance of exercise for the prevention and management of conditions such as heart disease or diabetes. But surprisingly, little is mentioned of the significant impact of exercise on cancer.

And cancer sufferers themselves are not aware that physical activity significantly improves their survival rate.

For Australians, the lifetime risk of cancer is one in three for males and one in four for females. There are about 88,000 new cases of cancer diagnosed each year, that accounts to 30 per cent of all male and 25 per cent of all female deaths. For men, the most common cancer is Prostate cancer, followed by lung and colon cancer. And for women, breast cancer is the most common, followed by lung and colorectal cancer.

Several lifestyle factors contribute to the growing incidence of cancer in developed nations like Australia, particularly physical inactivity, low consumption of fibre and folate, and a high consumption of saturated fats and red meat.

Physical activity not only helps in prevention of cancer, but significantly improves the survival rates.

While physical activity reduces the risk of developing various cancers, obesity has been linked to an increased risk of cancer, as well as poorer survival rates.
