Scientists Find Link Between Depression And Taste

dep1.jpgScientists say that losing our sense of taste may be an early sign of depression. It was found that taste is linked to the brain chemicals which control our moods. When the levels of these chemicals fall, which happens when a patient is suffering from depression, the sense of taste is blunted.

The team of researchers from Bristol University say that their findings can explain why loss of appetite often goes hand-in-hand with depression. But reseachers believe that by boosting levels of the mood-enhancing chemicals serotonin and noradrenaline, the sense of taste may improve.

This discovery may help in the development of a taste test, that can allow doctors to choose the right drug to treat a patient’s depression quickly and accurately.
