The Board of Health passed a rule on Tuesday to make New York the nation’s first city to ban the artery-clogging artificial trans fats from all its restaurants – from the humble corner pizzeria to luxury bakeries.

But the board has given a a slight break to restaurants by relaxing the tight deadline. Now the restaurants will be barred from using most frying oils and shortenings containing trans fats by July 1 next year and will have to eliminate all artificial trans fats from all their foods by July 2008.

The ban, however allows some exceptions, like the restaurants will be allowed to serve foods that come in the manufacturer’s original packaging.

Trans fats are harmful for the health because they contribute to heart disease by raising the levels of bad cholesterol and lowering good cholesterol.

And the panel also passed another rule that has made restaurant owners unhappy – They will now have to inform customers about calorie content, by listing the information right on the menu. The rule will generally apply to all fast-food restaurants and other major chains.
