Underweight Women Have Higher Risk Of Miscarriage

A new study shows that underweight women have higher risk of miscarriage during pregnancy. The research by London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine team revealed that underweight women are 72% more likely to suffer a miscarriage in the first three months of pregnancy.

And it was also found that eating fruits, vegetables and chocolate could reduce the risk of miscarriage in underweight women. The study also showed that women who take vitamin supplements – especially folic acid or iron and multivitamins, early in their pregnancy reduced the risk of  miscarriage by about a half.

The research examined the association between biological, behavioural and lifestyle factors and the risk of miscarriage, which affects about 250,000 women every year.

The research suggests that women who are very underweight, with a body mass index of less than 18.5 are more likely to miscarry in the first trimester of their pregnancy.
