It has been observed that college students gain more weight during a short break. Holidays are usually time for festivities and feasting, and thus the students end up gobbling more food than usual and gaining those extra pounds. People often feel tempted to gorge on treats that are not otherwise available throughout the year.
When at the Thanksgiving table, don’t encourage your kids to gobble so much. New study suggests that a typical student leaves the holiday weekend as stuffed as a turkey, gaining more than a pound during the short break. A pound may not look like a big deal but when put in the context of such a short time frame, is rather disturbing and may have potential long-term consequences.
It was also noted that students who were already overweight or obese, came back campus with even more weight, an additional 2 pounds on average.
College kids need to keep a tab on their eating habits and should not indulge in mind-less eating during the holiday period. You do not want to return to college looking plump and cuddly, do you ?
Maintaining your weight during the holidays or any other time requires self control and discipline.
Here are some tips to help you stay fit during the holidays:
- If you are eating a lot in the holiday season, do more exercises and cardios each day. Be active and play outdoor games.
- During Thanksgiving Dinner, go with your normal appetite, and do not fill up on snacks and appetizers beforehand. Have a little amount of dessert at each relative’s place, to avoid hurting anyone.
- You can drink a lot of water before parties to make you feel full. Or suck on strong mint as an appetite suppressant during parties.
- If you know that you are going to eat a lot at dinner party, try eating less during the day and do some extra cardio excercises.
- Cut down on your intake of colas, alcohol and wine.
- Do some housework and gardening.
