A study suggests that Vitamin E can help prevent death from cancer and heart related diseases in middle-aged men who smoke.
It was noted that men with the highest concentrations of vitamin E in their blood were 18 percent less likely to die than those with the lowest levels. They also had a 19 percent lower risk of dying from heart disease, 21 percent lower risk of dying from cancer, and a 30-percent lower risk of dying from other causes.
There are a number of mechanisms by which vitamin E promotes good health. It is a powerful antioxidant and boosts the immune system function. It also prevents tumor blood vessel growth.
People can get more vitamin E in their diet by eating foods such as nuts, seeds, whole grains, seafood, poultry and dark green leafy vegetables.
