Nearly 40 Million People Infected With HIV Currently

The United Nations said that nearly 40 million adults and children are infected with AIDS worldwide, as infection rates and deaths from the disease continue to rise.

According to the U.N.’s AIDS epidemic update report, nearly 2.9 million people have died this year due to AIDS-related illnesses, and another 4.3 million are infected with HIV. The disease spread was most notable in East Asia, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, mainly due to drug use and unsafe sex.

UNAIDS Chief Peter Piot said, “This year’s report gives us real cause for concern, the global epidemic is growing in all areas”.

You may be surprised to know that every 8 seconds a person is infected with HIV somewhere in the world. This is equivalent to 11,000 infections worldwide every day.

The main causes of this drastic rise in the cases of AIDS can be attributed to less usage of condoms, more people having sex with different partners and young people beginning sex at an early age.

And general awareness among people is also vey low. Male infidelity is also one of the reasons for the increasing number of HIV cases in married African women. Unprotected sex with prostitutes and between men, are also the main reasons for the spread.
