According to a new study, babies born prematurely, before 35 weeks gestation period, have a higher risk of developing vision problems than babies born at term. Because of preterm birth, they develop a condition known as retinopathy of prematurity.
The study also suggests that eye tests performed at 2.5 years of age in preterm kids can predict vision problems at age 10, called astigmatism (an unequal curve in of the eye’s refractive surfaces) and anisometropia (difference in refractive power between the two eyes) that may lead to partial vision loss.
So, all preterm born children should undergo follow up eye examinations, irrespective of the degree of retinopathy of prematurity at birth.
