Hemorrhoids or Piles is an inflammation or enlargement of the anus veins, that is caused by excess pressure in the anal or abdominal area. If you notice red blood, see your doctor. If you suffer from severe constipation, your doctor may advice you to take a stool softener or bulk laxative.
Here are some tips to ease the discomfort:
1. Fix proper times for defecating, such as early in the morning and after lunch and don’t hurry. Choose a time when you aren’t rushed.
2. Eat healthy. Eat a high fibre diet consisting of fruits, vegetables and grains. Also increase your fluid intake to prevent straining. Being overweight is also a majot risk for piles, so a healthy diet will keep your weight in control.
3. Maintain good personal hygiene. Keep the anal area clean by cleaning it gently.
4. Stay active. An inactive lifestyle is one of the major causes of hemorrhoids. If your job requires a lot of sitting, take small breaks every 2 hours, move around, stretch. Take a walk to the water cooler or coffee machine. Take a brisk walk in the morning.
5. Eat lots of curd (yoghurt) and stay away from spicy foods. Eat foods that have cooling properties.
6. For painful hemorrhoids, take warm-water sitz baths twice a day, in a squatting position.
7. Apply petroleum jelly or zinc oxide paste to soothe the itching and ease defecation.
8. Apply cold compresses or ice packs several times a day.
9. Wear loose clothing and cotton underwear.
