How to avoid injuries while practicing Yoga

Yoga can be beneficial for your health, but like every other exercise, it may create some problems for you if done incorrectly. Yoga can also cause injuries if you are not careful enough.

Here are few tips to avoid injuries:

  1. When you have just started practicing yoga for the first time, do not push yourself into doing all kinds of yoga postures or asanas. Start with the easier ones and slowly move towards the difficult poses after some days of yoga practice.
  2. Move into the different poses (or asanas) slowly and with full awareness of your movements.
  3. Take your time and do not be in a hurry to get into or out of your poses.
  4. Breath continuously, evenly and smoothly throught the practice.
  5. Always keep your throat, jaw, neck and face relaxed while practicing yoga.
  6. When you are doing forward bends and standing postures, always keep your head aligned with your spine.
  7. If you feel pain during any of the movements, then back off. Practice yoga with full awareness of your physical conditions.
  8. If you are suffering from any kind of injury or illness, consult your doctor about your yoga practice. He may modify your poses to suit your condition. Follow his recommendations.
  9. Do not over-do yoga. Just an hour of yoga practice is enough for a day. If you are comfortable, you can practice it for 2 hours, but not more than that. Moderation is the key word here.
  10. Lastly, do not force yourself into doing some pose or asana, just because your friend can do it. Eveybody has his/her own limitations and you need to understand that. If you can’t do a cetain asana, just leave it and go ahead with other poses …
