Different Kinds of Spa Massages

If you are thinking of getting a spa massage, but are not sure about the kind of massages available, and what suits you, here is a quick guide to get acquainted with all those massage-names.

Swedish Massage:

In this kind of massage, firm and gentle pressue is used to improve circulation, ease muscle aches and pain and improve flexibility.

Deep Tissue Massage:

This massage is aimed at the deeper tissue structures of the muscle and fascia, also called connective tissue. These massages should be done carefully because they are a bit more uncomfortable than other types of massages.

Hawaiian Lomilomi:

This is a native Hawaiian healing tradition. It uses rhythmic strokes, joint movement and deep kneading to loosen the body and soothe the soul.

Sports Massage:

This massage stimulates circulation of blood and lymph fluids. It is done to break down knots in the muscles and alleviate pain or injuries.

Hot Stone Massage:

It uses smooth and heated stones. Usually basalt stone ( a black volcanic rock) is used in this kind of massage.

Aromatherapy Massage:

Aromatherapy Massage is done using aromatic essential oils of plants and herbs to heal and alleviate the pain and tension. This is usually done by lying in a water tub full of fresh flowers and aromatic oils to relax and soothe the mind.

Watsu Massage:

This massage is done in warm, waist-deep water. The person receiving massage is placed in a special Watsu pool that is slightly heated.

Reflexology:

In this treatment, the therapist works primarily on the hands and feet and certain other points. It is believed that working on specific points can help give a therapeutic effect to other parts of the body.

Shiatsu Massage:

This is a traditional Japanese treatment that releases tension and increases circulation through therapeutic pressure on the energy lines. In this kind of massage, pressure is applied with the thumbs and palms to the areas of the body that are used in acupuncture.

Thai Massage:

This massage uses passive stretching and gentle pressure on the body’s energy lines to relieve muscle and joint tension, increase flexibility and balance the body’s energy. It uses gentle compression, acupressure on specific energy lines, warm herbal compresses and rhythmic stretching. This is not recommended for first timers.

Ayurvedic Massage:

This massage makes use of gentle circular motions on the pressure points to release toxins from the body.
