Home Remedies for Burns

without comments

Minor burns can be treated at home, but if your burn is very severe, go to a doctor. Here are a few remedies for treating minor burns at home:

  1. The first thing you should do in case of a minor burn, is apply lots of cold water to the burn for 20-25 minutes. Don’t put ice on the burn, because some burns can only tolerate cold water.
  2. Put honey all over the burn after applying cold water. Keep it on for several minutes. The honey will prevent any infection and heal the burns faster.
  3. Peel a potato and place a small slice on the burn. The potato absorbs the heat and makes the blister disappear.
  4. Lavender Essential Oil is also very good for burns. If your skin becomes extremely red, and there are blisters, apply some lavender oil on the burn. It will soothe the pain, and the blisters will disappear.
  5. The egg whites are also very good for burns, even severe ones. Coat the affected area with egg white. When the egg white dries, re-apply it. This will remove the pain and pevent scarring.
  6. Papaya is also good for applying to the burns.
  7. Aloe Vera is also an effective remedy for burns. Take some some fresh aloe Vera and put it on the burnt area. Aloe works like a charm.
  8. Soak the burn in cold milk right away. Or else, dip a cloth in cold milk and apply it on the burn. The stinging sensation will be gone.
  9. Once your wound starts healing, take a vitamin E capsule, break it and pour the contents on the burns. This will prevent scarring.
  10. If you live in States, you can buy a green tin of “BIG BALM” that you get in most wal-marts’ pet section. It heals and soothes the pain. It costs around $6.00.

The Truth About Piercings : A Wake-Up Call For All Teenagers

without comments

bel1.jpgTeenagers who think that piercings are the order of the day and they are a way of showing that you are one among the hip crowd, need to do a rethink. We often hear stories of piercings causing infection and problem, but here are two recent cases in point that will make you sit up and take notice.

A teen from Crawfordsville, who decided to get her breasts pierced for her 18th birthday is now facing reconstructive surgery after a flesh-destroying infection forced doctors to remove her left breast. The doctors have also removed her lymph nodes and infected skin up to the collar bone. The girl was diabetic and the piercing created an entry point for bacteria, which left her susceptible to infection. She is on an aggressive antibiotic regimen and has already undergone three surgeries. She faces several more, including eventual breast reconstruction.

In another case, a mom was sentenced to 2 1/2 years in prison for a pierced navel case, in which her 13-year-old daughter nearly died of an infection her mother ignored for weeks. The girl got an infection from a bellybutton piercing and her weight eventually dropped from 115 pounds to 75 pounds. These teens’ families are shaken and heart broken.

So all you guys and gals out there, who are thinking of getting some piercings in the name of fashion, get your act straight and drop the idea. Because this is more riskier than you can ever imagine, and you never know, where it might eventually lead you. There are other ways of remaining ‘in’ and trendy. And there are better ways to utilise your life, and not waste it in something as timid and as useless as a piercing around your navel …..

Pumpkin seeds have a malleable, chewy texture and a subtly sweet, nutty flavor. While roasted pumpkins seeds are probably best known for their role as a perennial Halloween treat, these seeds are so delicious and nutritious, that they can be enjoyed throughout the whole year.
BENEFITS:

• Pumpkin seeds are a very good sources of the minerals phosphorous, magnesium and manganese other minerals including zinc, iron and copper. In addition, pumpkin seeds are a good source of protein and monounsaturated fats.

• Pumpkin seeds do not increase the level of damaged fats (lipid peroxides) in the linings of the joints, a side-effect that actually contributes to the progression of arthritis.

• Pumpkin seed oil avoids hormones from inflicting damage on the cells of the prostate, which helps to reduce cancer development.

• The seeds contain a significant amount of L-tryptophan, which is beneficial in battling depression (although it is believed the seeds don’t have enough to treat major depression, they can be used as a preventive measure).

• Pumpkin seeds can improve bladder and urethra function. They also help in avoiding the formation of kidney stones, even though the ingredient responsible is unknown.

• They prevent hardening of the arteries and help regulate cholesterol levels.

• A common folk remedy in Germany uses pumpkin seed oil to treat tapeworms.

• When buying pumpkin seed oil it is important to check that the label doesn’t list too much sunflower seed oil. Some manufacturers add a lot of sunflower oil to reduce costs since extracting oil from pumpkin seeds is a tedious and complicated process.

Benefits of Garlic

without comments

Benefits of GarlicGarlic has a powerful pungent or “hot” flavor when raw, which mellows considerably when it is cooked. Raw or cooked, garlic is noted for its strong characteristic odor. Garlic has been used throughout all of recorded history for both culinary and medicinal purposes. The portion of the plant most often consumed is an underground storage structure called a head. A head of garlic is composed of a dozen or more discrete cloves, each of which is a botanical bulb an underground structure comprised of thickened leaf bases. Each garlic clove may often be composed of just one leaf base, unlike onions which almost always have multiple layers. The above-ground portions of the garlic plant are also sometimes consumed, particularly while immature and tender.
Benefits of Garlic:

· Garlic regularly reduces the risk of esophageal, stomach, and colon cancer. This is partly due to garlic’s ability to reduce the formation of carcinogenic compounds.
· Garlic supports the cardiovascular system. It may lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood, inhibit platelet stickiness (aggregation), and increase fibrinolysis-which results in a slowing of blood coagulation.
· Garlic has antibacterial, antiviral, and anti-fungal activity’ It may work against some intestinal parasites.
· Garlic appears to have roughly 1 % the strength of penicillin against certain types of bacteria. This means it is not a substitute for antibiotics, but it can be considered as a support against some bacterial infections
· Garlic is regarded as one of the most effective remedies to lower blood pressure. The pressure and tension are reduced because it has the power to ease the spasm of the small arteries.
· Raw Garlic is a potent natural antibiotic and, while far less strong than modern antibiotics, can still kill some strains of bacteria that have become immune or resistant to modern antibiotics.
· Garlic has also been used successfully for a variety of skin disorders Pimples disappear without scar when rubbed with raw garlic several times a day.
· The external use of garlic helps to clear the skin of spots and pimple, and boils.
· Garlic is an excellent remedy for whooping cough. It should be given more often if the coughing spells are frequent and violent.

Scientists in New Jersey have shown that turmeric alongside a particular substance found in vegetables like broccoli, kale, turnips and cabbage would ensure protection against this dreaded disease.

  • Fruits such as apple, banana, apricot, orange, melons and berries – especially strawberries and blueberries
  • Green, orange and red vegetables especially Spinach, cabbage, cauliflower, broccoli, carrots

  • Always include fish in your diet. Fish is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and is low in saturated fat. It helps regulate the normal functioning of brain.
  • Eat five to ten servings of fruits and vegetables every day. Fruits and Veggies are rich in antioxidants that help keep the brain healthy.

Are freckles heredity???

without comments

What are freckles ?

Freckles are flat, circular spots that typically range in the size of the head of a nail. The spots develop randomly on the skin, especially after repeated exposure to sunlight and particularly in persons of fair complexion. Freckles vary in color — they may be red, yellow, tan, light-brown, brown, or black — but they are always darker than the skin around them since they are due to deposits of the dark pigment called melanin.

Are freckles heredity ?

Yes freckles are heredity. In studies of twins, including pairs of identical twins and pairs of fraternal (nonidentical) twins, it has been found that among identical twin pairs, there was a striking similarity in the total number of freckles found on each person. Such similarities were considerably less common in fraternal twins. This clearly confirms that the occurrence of freckles is influenced by genetic factors. In fact, the variations in freckle counts appear to be due largely to heredity.

How do freckles develop ?

The sun and sun-tanning lights emit ultraviolet (UV) rays. After exposure to sunlight, the outer layer of the skin (the epidermis) thickens and the pigment-producing cells (the melanocytes) in the skin produce the pigment melanin at an increased rate. (This gives some protection against future sun exposure.)
People differ of course a great deal in their reaction to sunlight. To take an extreme example, there is no pigmentation in the skin of an albino because of a defect in melanin metabolism. On the other hand, people with dark complexions are relatively less sensitive to sun exposure than fair-skinned persons. However, persons with dark skin are not entirely resistant to the effects of the sun, and they, too, can become sunburned with prolonged exposure. Persons with blonde or red hair are especially susceptible since they tend to be the fairest skinned. Irrespective of skin color, it is the uneven distribution of the melanin pigment in the skin that results in freckling. A freckle is nothing more than an unusually heavy deposit of melanin at one spot in the skin

Treatment for freckles….

To treat freckles that are already present, several safe and effective methods are available:

1. Bleaching creams - Products containing hydroquinone and kojic acid can be purchased without a prescription. Higher concentrations of hydroquinone (over 2%) require a prescription. These products can lighten freckles if they are applied consistently over a period of months.

2. Tretinoin – Sometimes used in conjunction with other bleaching creams, tretinoin (vitamin A acid, Retin-A) also helps to make freckles lighter when applied over a period of time.

3. Cryosurgery - A light freeze with liquid nitrogen can be used to treat freckles.

4. Laser treatment - Several lasers, especially ones that produce a green light, can lighten and eliminate freckles safely and effectively. Like cryosurgery, this is a simple and safe procedure with a high success rate and a low risk of scarring.

Natural Cures For Ringworm

with one comment

Ringworm is a common skin disease, caused by fungus. It is not very dangerous, but very annoying. People suffering from medical problems such as diabetes, leukemia, or AIDS and who have a weak immune system are more susceptible to ringworm. Dampness, humidity, dirty and crowded areas also increase the risk of aquiring ringworm.

Although it may take a few weeks for ringworm to completely disappear, you are advised to see a doctor if you develop increased pain, fever, swelling or redness.

Scalp Ringworm
It is a different kind of fungal infection which is much more serious. It is most commonly found in humans and pet animals like cats, dogs and cattle. It can be aquired through an infected person, or infected hair or by sharing accessories like hats, comb, bedding, barber’s instuments etc, with an infected person.

Doctors usually recommend shampoos containing ketoconazole (Nizoralicon), pyrithione zinc (Selsun Salonicon) or selenium sulfide (Selsun Blueicon) twice a week. But, apart from these shampoos, ask your doctor to prescribe some oral medicines, as they are more effective.

Body / Face Ringworm
Ringworm patches on the face and body are usually round or oval. There is itching, redness, and swelling (sometimes).

There are several home remedies to treat ringworm on the body and face. Some of them are:

  • Soak a cloth or paper towel with natural apple cider vinegar and apply it on the ringworm for about 15 minutes, several times a day.
  • Raw papaya is also good for treating ringworm. Rub some slices of papaya on the ringworm patches. A paste made of dried papaya seeds can also be applied on the ringworm patches.
  • Mustard Seeds are also good. A paste of mustard seeds should be applied over the patches after afte washing the skin with hot water.
  • Butea Seeds can also be used for treating ringworm. Make a paste of Butea Seeds and mix with a little lime juice. Apply the paste to the affected skin.
  • Cassia Leaves are known to eliminate the pain and swelling associated with ringworm. The juice of cassia leaves or a paste can be applied to the patches.
  • The leaves of holy basil are also useful for treating ringworm. Extract the juice and apply on the patches.
  • Take 1-2 pieces of garlic and mash them in an small sheet of aluminum foil. Take the sheet with mashed garlic and apply it on the ringworm. Do this two times a day. It might sting, but the ringworm will be gone in less than a week.
  • Turmeric is also very effective for ringworm. Apply the juice of raw turmeric to the infected parts. And you can even take a mixture of turmeric juice and honey orally.
  • Raw vegetable juices, like carrot juice ( 300 ml) mixed with spinach juice (200 ml), taken internally is also beneficial for ringworm.
  • You can also use sea salts to dry up the ringworm patches. Buy some bath salt from a drug store, which has high concentration of sea salt in it. Wet the infected parts and apply the sea salt scrub directly to the ringworm. There is mild tingling, but it wont irritate a lot. Leave the salt for about 25-30 minutes and then wash off. Re-apply it after some time. Mist the infected part with water to moisten the skin and re-wet the salt. Ringworm will be gone in a few days.
  • You can also apply Iodine on the ring worm. Apply it for a few days till the ringworm is gone.
  • Grapefruit Seed Extract (GSE) is also very good for treating ringworm. It is not very costly and usually comes with 50% glycerol, which is good for all kinds of skin problems such as acne, dandruff and other fungal infections. Rub some extract on the patches, and put a band aid over it. Full strength extract of grapefruit will irritate the skin slightly, but is a quick remedy for getting rid of ringworm.
  • Frequently rub some vinegar onto the skin if you have ringworm re-occuring from time to time. Or take a penny and soak it in vinegar until crystals begin to form. Take the penny and band aid it to the ringworm for 2 days. The ring worm will be gone.
  • Juice of fig leaf is also effective for treating ringworm. Break a leaf and rub the white juice on the ringworm and around it. Repeat the procedure until it is gone.
  • Take some Green walnuts. and cut open them. Rub the juice on the affected area.
  • Tea tree oil also works wonders for ringworm. Apply a few drops of tea tree oil to the affected region every day. If it itches, mix a few drops of tea tree oil with some mild oil like coconut or olive oil and apply.
  • You can also use Myrrh Essential Oil, Peppermint Essential Oil, Geranium Essential Oil or Lavender Essential Oil. The most commonly used oils for children are tea tree and lavender. Never use peppermint oil on kids. For babies up to 12 months, mix a drop of Lavender Essential Oil in a teaspoon of Jojoba Carrier Oil and apply on skin.

Or you can buy the following from a drug store / walmart near your home:

  • Desiten diaper ointment: Apply it to the patches three times a day.
  • Lamisil Cream: It is very good for ringworm and athletes foot.
  • Mercy Cream: This is a herbal cream that costs around $2.00. It is made in Ghana, so you may find it in an African market.
  • Blue star ointment: You can buy it from walmart, it works wonders. Apply it a few times every day.
  • Tinactin or some other anti-fungal cream: Put the cream generously on to a band aid and apply on skin. Don’t remove for 6 hours. Replace after every 6-7 hours.
  • Clotrimazole: It is also used for athletes foot, but works for ringworms as well.
  • Lotrimin AF Antifungal Cream, Dial Antibacterial soap: After washing the face with the Dial Soap, apply the cream 2 times a day. But your skin becomes dry due to Lotrimin Cream, you can use Nivea moisturizer to overcome the dryness.
  • Micatin Antifungal Liquid Spray: Use twice a day on the rash and around it . Successful treatment may take 3 to 4 weeks.

Here are some whacky remedies. You can try these if all the above remedies do not work:

  • Some people get benefitted by applying a bleach. But if your skin is sensitive or becomes red on application, do not use it. Apply bleach (Clorox bleach) with a Q-Tip. It dries the patches. Use original clorox type bleach that contains only sodium hypochlorite and water. It is safe for use on human skin. Mix 1 Part Bleach with 6 Parts Water and apply on affected area for 15 seconds. Using diluted bleach prevents chemical burns and stinging. But make sure that the affected area is not bleeding or open.
  • Clear nail polish can also be used. Apply the nail polish to the infected area everyday, until it is gone.
  • Take some tobacco , wet it and put it on the infected area. It will help dry the patches.
